Hello, I will staying 4 night and 3 days in the Interlaken area in the middle of September. This is my first trip to Switzerland. I plan to experience the mountains near Grindelwald and valleys and waterfalls near Lauterbrunnen. I am ready to reserve my hotel so I would like a home base recommendation. Is Interlaken a good home base? If not, can you recommend a better one?
Thanks.
I’d look at Murren and Wengen, or Lauterbrunnen itself. But it depends on your plans—I wanted to be as up in the mountains as I could get.
I would stay in either Murren , Wengen or Lauterbrunnen, if you want epic views of the Swiss Alps. Interlaaken is the transit junction/service center for the area and has 25,000 residents— hardly a quaint mountain town or village and Interlaaken is not actually in the mountains. The train travel time between the two places you say you want to see—Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald—is just 39 minutes.
I would stay in Murren or Wengen. Take a look at my trip reports for ideas and hotel recommendations:

Hello,
I ended up booking a hotel in Wengen. Would not have considered it without your recommendations. Thank you for your time and information.
Great choice! I think you’ll love Wengen. There is something magical about staying up on the mountains.
I was in Wengen for the Swiss National Holiday (August 1) this past summer and loved it. Can't imagine you won't.
