Hiking within Wengen village

Hi fellow travelers

Need some advise.
We shall be in Wengen for 7 nights in beginning of September 2025. We are fairly fit 70 years old who can walk up to 4-5 miles every day , as long as the hikes fall within the easy to moderate range.

We will reach Wengen from Lucerne by lunch time on day one.
My question is : what should we do that day ?

1 First option is to head out on an easy walk towards the Hunnenflue panorama point.
I have read that this is an easy, 2.2-mile out-and-back trail which will take around
1 h 15 min .

2 Second option is to go to Staubbachbanki .
When I tried to google this, I see it’s a mostly flat walk of 1.9 kms and will take 30 mins each way.

3 Third option is to take the cable car to Männlichen, ( 16 mins ) , walk the Panorama trail (easy, flat , spectacular ) to Kleine Scheidegg, 4.7 kms ( 2 hrs)
Train from Klein Scheidegg to Wengen. ( 25 mins )

Feel free to add any other option you think would work.
Look forward to your inputs and advise.
TIA

I would see what weather is when you get there. If the weather and viewing for the third option is clear do that. You want to take advantage of the weather when you have it.

Just a note…The hike from Mannlichen (which has a wonderful but very busy children’s playground) to Klein Scheidegg is not ‘completely flat’ but could be considered relatively easy depending on your ability. Make sure you check the train schedules because the trains back to Wengen do stop at the end of the day. And make sure you have the right train pass or ticket because the conductors were checking this August when we were there and handing out fines. We didn’t do the other trails you mention but did the hike to the horn viewpoint which I wouldn’t recommend for you because the uphill in places gets strenuous.

Hi Dianejay

Thanks for your revert.
You think there is enough time to do the hike (provided the weather is good ) even if we reach Wengen after lunch ?

Hi Margie

Thanks for your word of caution regarding the elevation rise in the hike from Maanlichen to Klein Scheidegg, will definitely keep that in mind. And yes , getting back to Wengen on time is a must too .. as we don’t want to miss the train on the first day of our first trip to Switzerland. :)

And which is the horn viewpoint trail ?
Does it start in Wengen ?

The Hunneflüh is a nice walk, with a good view at the end. Does require good shoes as the last part is a bit uneven. A similar walk is the one to the Leiterhorn (the "horn" mentioned by the previous poster). Goes to a similar viewpoint higher up, so there is more climbing involved. I often do Hunneflüh -> Leiterhorn -> back to Wengen.
Another nice walk not yet mentioned is to go to Mönschblick. There are also several circular routes. Go to the Tourist office and get yourself the map there. They can explain all the walks to you.

Can anyone explain elevation gain to me regarding hiking, as it might help Meena.

When we were in Wengen last month we did the Panorama trail and according to my Apple fitness app taken from my Apple Watch it was a 4.25km distance. It took us one hour and 40 minutes and the elevation gain was only 18 metres.

This seems like hardly anything. My usual walks here in Australia have a 30-40 metre elevation gain, but I am sure that the Panorama hike was steeper.

I remember you were concerned about walking uphill to your hotel, so I did want to mention that walking in Wengen is a lot of up and down. Wengen is the one place that I felt the altitude impacted my ability to walk uphill. I’m 51 and in pretty good shape and did get winded walking in Wengen.

The walk down in Lauterbrunnen Valley is nice and flat. Once you walk past the town and Staubbach Falls the crowds will start to thin out. I think this would be a good option for your arrival day.

The walk from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg is downhill, so definitely not flat. I found this to be a lot easier than some of the walks I did in Wengen.

If you have a full week in Wengen, there is no rush to do the Panorama walk from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg. Save it for a bluebird day when you can take all the time you want. Start in the morning, and aim to have lunch on the terrace at the little restaurant you pass on your left before you reach Kleine Scheidegg. It might be named Lobhorn but I am not sure about that.

After lunch you continue to KS, and you might want to ride the train down to Grindelwald to have a look around there instead of returning directly to Wengen. You can return later by the regular train through the valleys. If you have Berner Oberland Passes (which you should consider), it is easy and inexpensive to do little excursions like that.

Hi WengenK

Thanks for your reply.
It seems that the Leiterhorn hike is steep and maybe we should not do it . If the walk to Mönschblick is flat and enjoyable with a great view at the end, maybe that’s what we should do.
Is Monschlick the same as Moenchnlick ? Becz that’s what google maps shows me. .

Thanks for your time and advise

Hi DebH
Thanks for asking the “elevation gain on hikes” question as that is indeed very important to us :)

If the Panorama hike is 4.25km one way and takes an hour and 45 mins, with an elevation gain of only 18 meters , then it is quite doable by us.

Thanks for the information!

PS. In my next topic I am going to put up my full itinerary of 7 nights : please go through it and let me know your views of each day

Hi Carrie
Thanks for your reply
As you mentioned, I do not want to do steep climbs, but can walk on flat ground and do gradual elevation gain. The suggestion for keeping the Lauterbrunnen valley hike as an option on the first day is an excellent suggestion and I shall keep it in mind.

I am aware that the walk from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg is downhill, and that should not be a problem for us, as long as no one tells us to walk uphill at the end :)

Thanks for all your time and suggestions, always very helpful

Hi Lola

I just noticed you are from Seattle. I too live in Seattle ( Windermere ) near university village.

We do have a week in Wengen, but all the days are full with the places we want to visit, and there is only 1 day left for both Maanlichen ( lunch, Royal walk, panorama walk etc ) coupled with Lauterbrunnen ( valley walk, visit to Staubbach falls and Trummelbach falls)
Do you feel one day doing all of the above is doable or we should add Maanlichen visit/ hike to day 1 ?

TIA

Monschlick the same as Moenchnlick

It is Mönschblick. Written with an ö. But if you cannot write/display an ö you can alternatively add an e. So Moenschblick is the same. Just like Mürren/Muerrren, Zürich/Zuerich etc...

Getting there from Wengen is mostly downhill actually. If you want to avoid the walk back uphill then just walk to the Wengwald station and get on the train there. Do not forget to press the "stop request" button though.

I live near Wengwald. I know that area quite well.

Hi WengenK

Thanks for your revert and the clarification.

Ah ! I did not know one could request stops .. that’s another nugget of information I need to store in my memory bank.

Since you live in Wengen, can you please tell me, out of July, August or September , in your opinion, which is the best month to visit Wengen.
Please don’t give me the standard reply which every one gives , that “every month is good,” .. I really want to know the best month for visiting the Wengen area with regard to clarity of mountain views, clear days, ideal for hiking, less rain etc.

TIA

I used to say the September was best. The last couple of years september always had mild stable summer weather. But this year was an exception. We even had snow already in September...
Weather is unpredictable. I would say" come when it is convenient to you, and make sure you are prepared for whatever the wheater comes up with.
