Hiking near Ebenalp

Rick suggests a hike around Ebenalp, and the woman at the TI in Appenzell also suggested it. But both stressed “steep.” I love to hike, but can someone tell me how steep is steep? As in, might a person slip and fall back down the path type steep, or just stop and catch your breath a lot steep? And are the paths well-groomed, or do I need to worry about slipping rocks and such. Thanks! Just don’t want to get in over my head up there.

There's a super easy "hike" that's more like a walk, from the Ebenalp cable car station down and around to the Äscher cliffside cafe. It's a well-groomed wide path with stair-like steps for the downhill part. It's the one that RS describes, which goes through a cave and beside a church carved into the cliff. If you don't want to take the rugged rest of the path that loops around and up the other side of the mountain, you can simply retrace your steps back up the stair-step path you'd come down on. I did the whole loop and had no problem.

i am 54 years old and in average shape. we were there a few days ago. they give you hiking maps. we did number 8 and were fine just sore the next day. it is steep but not like your going to fall more like you lean back when you walk and that was only the last part. there are railings most of the way also. but it was beautiful and a few places to stop and eat or have a drink along the way. i recommend it
