Hiking equipment

Leaving tomorrow for Switzerland, we are planning on several hikes, does anyone recommend we bring the Hiking sticks?
I will probably be packing 2 for me and my husband. Can I rent those there? Murren and Zermatt areas?
They seem to add extra weight as well.
I am hoping not check my luggage so not sure if I can still bring those in cabin?

Please advice
Clara

You cannot put regular hiking poles in a bag carried on the plane. TSA says they are not allowed.

I believe they are widely available for rent at local, sports shops in the mountain villages, but I have never tried that personally.

It really depends on what type of hikes you have planned. Easy/moderate you don't need them. If you're planning more moderate to moderate/difficult they are definitely helpful. You can purchase them at the sports store in Murren or Zermatt but they will be much more expensive than what you pay in the US. Renting is possible but again not economical if you need them for the majority of your trip.

Try intersportrent.ch

Intersport is a sporting goods chain here. We have had great success renting ski equipment from them for out of town guests.

The site is in German, look under Wandern for Wanderstock

Choose your location, you can even make reservations. They don’t seem to be expensive to me, and if they save you from slipping on your hike then I’d say it is well worth the investment!

I use hiking poles for all kinds of hikes, they help to give your arms a bit of exercise and help with the weight of your backpack (I usually carry camera equipment) as well as keep you more sturdy on your feet. They are very popular in Switzerland, you won’t be the only ones using them!

Edited to add: If it was me I would get a pair each. If you were to slip or wobble when stepping on your ‘off’ side then the pole is not much help - it would be just the same as walking without them.
