Hike Schynige Platt to First/ other day hikes from Murren

Hello!
in Murren for 2.5 days and looking for some good 1/2 day/day hikes to get us a good feel for it. I know there are several but was curious about the Schynige Platt to First and if it made any sense to take the time for this one ( to get to trail head+hiking) vs. maybe more easiy accessable hikes from Murren.

We are 40-50s couple that would enjoy the hiking for the day; We like being a little out of the way for some solitude on the trails but u
have never been to the Alps & its a little daunting picking out some trails.

Thank you!

We hiked Schynige Platte to First some years ago; it is a terrific hike if you are up for something moderately strenuous and a bit rugged ( rocky). The views are fantastic. We took more than the 6 hours they say in that website, but we stopped at a hut for a snack along the way, and also took a detour to ascend the Faulhorn to check out the hut there. We barely made it to First in time for the last gondola down. That would have been a looooong hike down had we missed it!

A hike right from Mürren that I recommend for a half-day is the North Face trail from Allmendhubel (hike up to Allmendhubel instead of taking the funicular). The North Face trail makes a long loop out with great views of the peaks across the way, and signboards with the history of ascents of many of them.

I saw my first-ever Gentiana purpurea on that hike, in an area fenced off from grazing by cows. A real treat to see:

Lola — I was thinking about doing both the North Face trail (2 stars from RS) and the Mannlichen-Kleine Scheidegg hike (3 stars from RS) on day 1.

Then I was thinking we’d do the Schynige Platte to First (2 stars from RS) on day 2.

However, I like to dawdle! I like to take my time, take pictures, and stop to eat. I absolutely would not want to be stranded without transportation at the end of the Schynige Platte to First hike. Does this sound risky?

Thanks for any help or insight.

(We will be in Lauterbrunnen for 2.5 days, in July.)

The First gondola last descent is 6 pm.

The train up to Schynige Platte from Wilderswil starts at 7:25 am, but even of you caught the next one at 8:05 you would have a full 9 hours to make the hike, which should be plenty if you do not detour like we did.

We have done the Schynige Platt to First hike twice. We catch the first or second train up to Schynige Platt. It is a beautiful hike and is not crowded until you get to the Faulhorn area. The hike from First to Faulhorn and back is very popular and the trail is quite populated on that part of the hike. Last time we did it, we stopped at both of the huts (one for lunch, one for desert) and still made it in plenty of time to get down on the lift.

We have also done the Mannlichen-Kleine Scheidegg hike twice. It is a very busy hike. Try to do it early in the day as it gets quite crowded mid-day. It's not my favorite as it is almost a road, but the views are amazing.

We have done the hike to Obersteinberg three times and it is our favorite. It leaves from Gimmelwald and climbs steeply up with wonderful views looking down the valley. You walk through a cow pasture and crest a hill. From there you are looking down at the Obersteinberg hut and stunning views of the mountains with a large waterfall. It is a full day hike. Also, I don't like the long hike down to Stechelberg. After doing that the first 2 times, we changed it up in 2018. We hiked back the way we came to Gimmelwald, and took the lift back up to Murren. You could also ride it down to Stechelberg. This was the hike with least amount of hikers. You won't have it to yourself, but it is not as heavily used as the other two.

We will be there in September and are looking forward to hiking in the area again. I understand the problem with picking out trails. I can tell you that all these trails are well marked. We have also hiked in other areas of Switzerland, Austria, and Grainau Germany. PM if any of those are on your radar and you want some tips. For the record: We are 65 and 66 and have been hiking in the alps on multiple trips. We just returned from Andalusia area of Spain where we hike 5 hikes in 4 days.

I will echo what Lola said, the North Face hike from Allmendhubel was fantastic. We rode the funicular up, stopped at the incredible playground (we had 2 kids with us) and then did the hike. There are a few alps along the way if you’d like to stop for something to eat or a drink, though verify if they were open before you start. We had great weather and the scenery was stunning. This was in August so it was quite warm. Enjoy your time in Murren!

I've done the Schynige Platte to First hike twice. I was 65 when I did it the 2nd time. It should take about 6 hours if you just keep walking at a reasonable pace and stop mid-way at the Berghaus for a drink and maybe answer the call of nature. (You WILL be thirsty! Take enough water as well.) Also allow another hour for the train from Wilderswil to Schynige Platte. If you want to see what the terrain looks like, there are a bunch of pictures at the following site, under the 4th hike:

If you want to see other (shorter) hikes in the area, there are plenty more on that site. Just go to https://lauterbrunnenhiking.wordpress.com and click on one of the areas listed near the top of the page. There are plenty of pictures to give you ideas of what you'll see.
