Is the high speed train route from Zurich to Milan a scenic one in December? Considering this option and want to set expectations for my family accordingly. Is it worth stopping in any cities along this route? It would be the week before Christmas. Thank you!
Some parts, but it uses the Gotthard Base Tunnel, which is a 35 mile long tunnel completely under the Alps. That is not so scenic.
There are many tunnels, including a 35-mile one. Still scenic between those tunnels.
If you have an extra 1-2 hours to spare, you can make it much more scenic by taking the every-two-hours Treno Gottardo to Bellinzona and change there for trains to Milan (sometimes with another change of trains in Lugano).
With a family in tow, the direct train sounds appealing.
The high speed train between Zurich to Milan uses the Gotthard Base Tunnel, so for the 60km through the Alps it is not going to make any difference winter or summer...
