Hi visibility vests

A quick question- we are renting a car in Germany and traveling through Switzerland - are reflective vests required for each person in the car? If so would I get them in car rental in Germany ? Thanks!

Hi Joanne. In my experience, the rental car will come with whatever is required in the country of rental.
The requirements may vary slightly by country, but I never worry about it; I've rented seven or more times in Europe and usually take the car into other countries; nobody has ever checked for stuff like high vis vests, although I sometimes notice them in the trunk. However, if a vignette is required in a country and the car doesn't have a valid one, (Switz, Czech, Austria...), I always make a point to get one of those and affix to the windshield when I cross the border. Enjoy your trip!

From www.howtogermany.com

German law requires that all automobiles have a portable red reflective triangle, first aid kit and a minimum of two safety vests (reflective vests). If a car is stopped for any reason, the triangle must be placed 200 meters behind it if on the autobahn and 100 meters behind it on all other roads. Safety vests should be worn when doing this and whenever outside a disabled vehicle. The car's emergency flashers should also be turned on.

So only 2 are required per German law, on the assumption that in a break-down situation, only 2 people will need to be outside the car. Other passengers should remain in the car.

However, from www.swissvistas.com

Carrying reflecting clothing in your car while driving in Switzerland is not necessary. However, it is mandatory in EU countries (should you drive beyond Switzerland);
