Hi 8 of us (4 couples age range 40-55) are travelling this May 24-31 to Europe. Nice to Geneva By train- Geneva to Interlaken - Appenzall to Paris. How does the itinerary sound?
We want to rent a car from Geneva.
Is one week from arrival in France to departure in France? All you will be doing is travel. With 8 people, you will need 2 cars. Nice to Geneva is a full day, Appenzell to Paris is a full day. You might just want to hang on to the cars the whole time. You'll need to pick up Swiss vignettes as soon as you enter Switzerland. I hope you are all really good friends. You will be in close quarters for quite a long time.
If you leave the US on the 24th, you'll arrive in Europe on the 25th. If you fly home on the 31st it means you will have a total of 5 full days for Nice, Geneva, Interlaken, Appenzall and Paris. I'm sorry, but this is impossible.
For this short of a time, I would boil it down to the two places you most want to visit so you lose as little time as possible to travel. There is no way you can do your posted itinerary in this short a time and see anything at all. It's all travel.
Which places do you want to see most?
Nice will have pretty good weather in May...Geneva and Interlaken will be dicey...Interlaken will be approaching the shoulder season. Are you wanting to see the Alps? There are better places to do this than Interlaken and May is not the best weather.
What about saving Switzerland for another time and spend a couple of days in Nice and then train up to Paris and spend three days there? That time-frame works better for your dates.
Thanks for the quick reply everyone. Appenzell was a last minute addition by me. So we can skip that. Does that make the itinerary better?
@ Sam- LOL! We are close family. So staying together for that long will not be a problem.
@ Anita
My husband's been to Switzerland before. He's in love with Switzerland and Interlaken. That's why Interlaken. This would be my first time planning a trip to Europe. I would love to visit Nice. But I do not want to travel all the time either. I do not want to visit simillar places all the time. Like same museums, palaces or for that matter mountains.
Does Paris-Geneva-Switzerland seem a better choice? Or Nice-Paris-Normandy? Or would it make more sense to combine Paris with Switzerland and Nice with Italy on a different trip? (Fly In)Paris-Geneva-Interlaken-Zurich(Fly out? )What other places would you recommend in Switzerland other than Interlaken. I am open to suggestions. But May end is the only time we can get out.
Also I forgot to add. We can spare Switzerland for a later trip. But this trip is my husband's gift to his sister. And they may not be travelling on their own. So want to make the best of the time.
I just think that with only one week, Paris-Interlaken-fly home from Zurich is doable. Nice-Italy for another time.
Per your dates you only have 5 full days. As Anita said, pick two places. That's all you have time for, and even that's a stretch.
Where are you flying into? Nice is somewhat a periperpheral destination, as far as airlines from North America are concerned (I assume that's your origin), so I couldn't imagine you would arrive there any earlier than late afternoon. You will be quite jet-lagged, so your first day is going to be somewhat of a washout. So, that leaves you with even less usable time than you originally planned.
As others have implied, the weather in the Alps during May usually does not cooperate with tightly scheduled itineraries. You could get lucky and have nothing but clear skies. But more than likely, it will be overcast and rainy for at least part of the time.
I agree... two destination, maximum. You simply don't have enough time, unless you want to spend most of the trip in transit.
After much discussion we came to conclusion Fly in Zurich- rent a car, drive to Interlaken (Base ourselves in Interlaken) 2 nights- visit places close by- drive to Geneva-return car there- take train to Paris and visit places in the surrounding. Fly out.
I am reading a lot about Murren. Is that where we can stay rather than Interlaken. Or is it a car free town?
It is very car free. You'll have to park your wheels at the garage in Lauterbrunnen, then take the cable car and the BLM train to Muerren.
Thanks for wonderful replies. You have been very helpful. After reading a lot of posts, I am thinking of (Fly In) Zurich- drive to Lauterbrunnen- stay 2 nights Drive to Geneva (Thun-Bern-Gruyeres-Lavaux drive) stay overnight -return car -Train to Paris (3 nights) Fly out.
