Help with Last Minute Itinerary Please

Hello all. I planned to go to Switzerland/Germany in June of 2027. We got a really good deal on plane tickets and have decided to go in May/June of THIS year. I'm trying to put this together last minute. I'm having trouble nailing down what I want to do. We are renting a car, and we have to fly in and out of Munich. I want to see castles and old towns. My partner wants to see rural areas and anything in nature, so no big cities. I have three days I don't have a plan for. I can't decide where I want to go. There are just too many places. I thought about Lake Como, Austria, and even France. I was wondering if I should go to another area in Switzerland. Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions? I am very open to ideas for non-touristy places to save some $$. Thank you!

Skip Munich. It doesn’t fit either of your wish lists and you can get from Mittenwald to the Munich airport in 1 hr 45 minutes. There are much more picturesque areas than the Black Forest to combine your wish lists.

This itinerary combines Germany, France, Switzerland & Austria with a mix of quaint villages, mountains, lakes, nature & castles.

Dachau 1 night > Rothenberg 2 nights > Eguisheim 2 nights > Lauterbrunnen 5 nights > Fussen 2 nights > Mittenwald 4 nights

May 20 - Munich > Dachau

May 21 - Dachau > Rothenberg ob der Tauber

May 22 - Rothenberg + visit Dinkelsbühl

May 23 - Rothenburg > Eguisheim, France

May 24 - Eguisheim + visit Colmar (small city) or the smaller villages known as the “4 wonders of Alsace” - Eguisheim, Riquewihr, Kaysersberg & Ribeauvillé

May 25 - Eguisheim > Lauterbrunnen

May 26 - Murren/Schilthorn/Gimmelwald

May 27 - Wengen/Mannlichen/Kleine Scheidegg

May 28 - Lake Thun + castles at Thun, Oberhofen & Spiez (via boat ride stops)

May 29 - weather buffer for the above + Lauterbrunnen Valley

May 30 - Lauterbrunnen > Fussen

May 31- Fussen + Neuschwanstein

June 1- Fussen > Mittenwald

June 2 - Daytrip to Eng, Austria

June 3 - Daytrip to Seefeld, Austria + Hall in Tirol

June 4 - Daytrip to Garmisch/Eibsee

June 5 - Mittenwald to Munich

When driving in Switzerland & Austria, don't forget to purchase each of their vignettes before you cross the border at a gas station and do not speed. Their are speed cameras EVERYWHERE and you will get speeding tickets in the mail, even for going a few km over the limit, especially in Austria & Switzerland.

Thank you. I will definitely look into this itinerary. We really wanted to go to the Black Forest to see the cuckoo clocks and hopefully nutcrackers.

I suggest doing some research on the palaces in Fussen. I feel N'stein Palace is the definition of tourist trap, and more authentic experiences can be had elsewhere. Maximize your time in the BO, as no one is ever ready to leave! Have a great time!

Try Hohenschwangau Castle instead. you can see Neuschwanstein from it which makes for cool photos.
