Help with Itinerary from Switzerland to Como ending in Venice

Hi all,
I have been reading all the forums and I can't seem to find one that fits our trip. :) Husband and I have the opportunity to fly into Switzerland or Italy on April 1 (departing the 31 Mar) and spend 5 nights sightseeing arriving in Venice April 6th to meet some friends.

Some of the things I'd like to do is ride the Bernina Express, take some short hikes to take in the glaciers and lakes and would love to spend a night or two in Lake Como. I am struggling to figure out the best rout to accomplish this. Flights into Basel and Milan are similar in price. I would appreciate your help with best route, hotels, fav hikes, fav restaurants and trains of course.
Thank you!

From Basel take the train to Chur (2.75 hrs.) where the Bernina Express route begins. From Chur, the trains go to St. Moritz ( 2 hours) then Tirano ( 2.5 hours) The Bernina Express route ends in Tirano, Italy. To continue to Varenna on Lake Como you change trains in Tirano. The trip takes 90 minutes. From Varenna to Milan is about one hour by train. Milan to Venice is 2.5 hours on high-speed trains. You can take regular trains on the same route as the Bernina Express trains. They are much more frequent, cost less, and the train windows will open. The Bernina Express trains do not have windows that open.
Many people prefer overnighting in Pontresina— a village just five miles ( 10 train minutes) beyond St. Moritz. The city of St. Moritz is practically devoid of trees and can appear quite stark. From Pontresina, the Morteratsch train stop (3 minutes away by train) is the trailhead to the Morteratsch Glacier. There also is a great hike at the Alp Grum train stop to the turquoise Lagh da Palù below. Alp Grum is a stop on the Bernina Express route and has a casual hotel/restauarant there. That is the only thing at Alp Grum— other than spectacular views!
www.SBB.ch/en has train tickets, train passes and schedules.

Have a great trip!

Thank you for the info, I forgot to mention I would like to have a couple over nights in Switzerland as well as we make our way down to Venice. I think Zurich is also an option for flying in to Switzerland.

We will depart from Utah.
