Help with Itinerary

Hello,

My partner and I are wanting to travel to Switzerland for the Summer next year (end of July). I found a reasonable flight arriving into Geneva and then we would depart from Zurich, so thinking to spend just a night in each of those cities. I was wondering if the below is a good Itinerary for 7 nights/8 days, or should we cut one of the places out? Is it better to move around, or should we base ourselves somewhere longer and do day trips? We plan to travel by trains.

Geneva (1 night)

Bern (1 night)

Berner Oberland / Jungfraujoch (‘Top of Europe’) *Stay in Wengen or Murren 2 nights?

Lucerne (1 night)

Zermatt (Matterhorn) 1 night?

Zurich (1 night)

Hi,
Moving around so much takes a lot of time and energy, Switzerland is relatively small so this is not necessary.
Also, Geneva and Zürich, while pleasant, are not that interesting. Depending on when your flights arrive/leave, I would do the following:

  • Day 1 land in Geneva, head straight to Zermatt if you land early enough (the last suitable train out of Geneva airport is at 8 PM), if not I would at least try to reach Lausanne or Montreux
  • Day 2 Zermatt
  • Day 3 head to Wengen or Mürren
  • Day 4 Wengen
  • Day 5 Wengen (Bern is a possible day trip, especially if the weather is so-so in the mountains)
  • Day 6 head to Luzern (you could go via Bern to visit along the way)
  • Day 7 Luzern
  • Day 8 leave from Luzern to Zurich airport (possible if your flight is after ~10 AM - otherwise stay in Zürich)

Hi, our flight arrives around 1pm into Geneva, so yes we could catch a train from Geneva Airport straight to Zermatt as you suggested. Looking online, it looks like its approx 4 hours with one change? I couldnt see any direct option.

And just to confirm you recommend to do 3 nights in Wengen or Murren? Would you recommend either of these?

And yes we can also book an afternoon flight leaving Zurich on the last day.

"And yes we can also book an afternoon flight leaving Zurich on the last day."
Not likely. Most flights from Europe to the US leave in the morning so as to arrive in the US in the afternoon or early evening.

I too, think you are considering too much moving around., At the very least would eliminate Bern from your itinerary and only spend the night in Zurich, if it was necessary for your departure flight,. We thoroughly enjoyed everything about our stay in Wengen at the small, locally owned Edelweiss Hotel. For us, it was a great base to explore the BO region.

I couldnt see any direct option.

That is because the train from Visp to Zermatt is a narrow gauge railroad with cog assist in places.

Hello. Firstly thank you all so much for your response!

I have done some further research and taken some of your advice and added an extra night in Lucerne and will essentially just fly in and out of Zurich and Geneva without seeing them. If from what I have read online, they are both nice cities, but its better to spend more time in the other places.

So here is revised Itinerary:

20 JUL - Arrive GVA and train to Zermatt (2 nights)

21 JUL - Zermatt

22 JUL - Train to Wengen (3 nights)

23 JUL - Wengen

24 JUL - Wengen

25 JUL - Trainl to Lucerne (3 nights)

26 JUL - Lucerne

27 JUL - Lucerne

28 JUL - Train from Lucerne to Zurich Airport in PM

Any further advice would be appreaciated! Also, with this Itinerary, would the half fare card is better value than the Swiss Travel Pass?

Looks good.

In my experience, if you want the lowest cost, the Half Fare Care gives the best value. If you want maximum convenience, the Swiss Travel Pass. With the Half Fare Card, there are additional savings if you buy Saver Day Passes for your arrival day and trip from Zermatt to Wengen. They must be bought several months in advance of your travel day. Further, If you want to go to the Jungfraujoch, the discount with the Half Fare Card is better than the discount than with the Swiss Travel Pass.
