(I posted in Italy forum as well - but much of my questions are Switzerland related too... I hope that this is ok.)
We (2 ad/1ch aged 10) are going to Italy/Switzerland for a wedding in late June 2017. The wedding is in Varenna/Lake Como, flying into Zurich. I bought 5 day Eurail Select (Switz/Italy) passes, 1st class, for us during the 1 free day sale. Day 1 will be arrival Tue June 27 into Zurich. Taking the train Zurich Airport to Varenna (via Milano Central). This will all be using the Eurail Pass - although I have seen conflicting info if Trenord accepts Eurail passes - so we may have to buy r/t tickets in Milan for that trip.
Ques #1: Does Trenord accept Eurail Milan-Varenna ?
Ques#2: I should validate/activate the Eurail pass at the ZUR airport train station - correct?
Ques#3: Should we buy a Child Swiss Pass here too to save time later (our next stop back in Switz will be Varenna to Murren - very short connections...) Do we need that - we have Eurail passes? Swiss Half Fare passes for both adults and child would be $325. Should we buy those on top of the Eurail passes?
After the wedding, We are going from Varenna, Italy to Murren, Switzerland (2 nights) on Sat July 1. I used the sbb.ch site to plan it out - Varenna to Milan then Spiez - Interlaken Ost - Laurerbrunnen - Grutschalp - Murren.
Ques #4: Is that the best way Varenna to Murren or is there a more direct route? What part of that is the Eurail pass good for? Do I have to buy separate tickets Interlaken-Murren? (I read that some where).
Ques #5: What is the best way to buy seat reservations? I would love to engage a US travel agency to make all these arrangements (for a fee) - does anyone have a recommendation?
After 2 nts in Murren, onward to Bern (1 nts) to Lucerne (1 nt) to ZRH Airport - those trips seem pretty simple after Varenna to Murren! I believe Interlaken-Bern-Lucerne-ZRH is all covered by Eurail passes - do you all recommend Reservations on those? (Murren to Interlaken is back to Ques #4).
We have 1st class passes but are traveling July 1-5 - high season. Are they needed (we are pretty Type A and find comfort in knowing what times/trains/connections etc. are in place - experienced travelers but traveling with a 10 year old - so we value simplicity too.)
Apologies if this is not posted in the right area. I used a Eurail pass in college and it was so easy - but in 25 years - it has gotten so much more complicated (or I have.) :)
THANK YOU!! in advance for any assistance.
