Hardergrat Ridge?

Hello

I reaaaaaaally wanted to hike on the Hardergrat Ridge but I realized we will have to take the cable car to Harder Kulm. At the beginning of August, it will probably be very crowded. As we are visiting from Lauterbrunnen, we can't be there that early 😞

Is the hike worth the long wait???? How long does it take to reach the famous ridge from Harder Kulm?

I think we could also hike to Harder Kulm. 1h30 I think?

Thanks a lot

The Hardergrat is a trail that takes around 11 hours to complete and is very dangerous (multiple people have died on it), so the lines at Harder Kulm aren't your problem. In general there are a lot better (and safer!) options.

See this for the reality of the trail: https://swissfamilyfun.com/hardergrat-no/

There is a ridge trail up at Schynige Platte, Brienzer Rothorn and above Murren near Rotstockhutte. Consider one of those options instead.

Thanks a lot. I did not plan on hiking the entire Ridge as I know it is dangerous. But at least the first part of it till it gets sketchy.

I did not know the other places you mentioned also had a ridge. I will double check that.

So the line for Harder Kulm wont be that bad at the beginning of August (as long as we do not go on weekends of course)

Thanks a lot

This is where I actually wanted to go: the slightly safer section from Harder Kulm to Augstmatthorn :)

No, the line will be very bad in August going up and coming back down. Weekends make zero difference at that time of year. The hike from Harder Kulm up to where you’re talking about is a lot in the trees with no views, there are way better options, as I mentioned.

I have spent the last 2 hours researching on the ridges you were mentioning and you trully are the best, as usual! ❤️🧡💛

I have simply added these ridges to hikes we were already going to!

I was also thinking of going to Brienz Rothorn but was worried about the cogwheel being too crowded in summer... but I have checked the hike from Brienz Rothorn to Lungern via the ridge and it would be a great combo!

Thanks a million again!!!!

And no more Hardergrat or Harder Klum because I do not want to spend the day waiting for a cable car! Lol

Happy to help :)

If you want to do Brienzer Rothorn in August you'll need to get a seat reservation in advance for the time you want. You can wait to purchase the actual ticket until you know weather is good, but you should pre-plan the day with a seat reservation, as you won't be able to just show up and get on the train in August.

Schynige Platte I'd recommend arriving in Wilderswil 20-30 minutes before your cogwheel up to SP is set to depart, as there will be a line and in August it was packed full. If you do SP to First via Daube/Oberberghorn/Faulhorn you'll get amazing ridge views of the lake and mountains (much better than Harder Kulm). You'll need to time correctly to make sure you arrive at First before the last cable car goes down for the night.

I think I already told you about Murren to Schilthorn via Rotstockhutte but if you want to do the ridge version you could go downhill instead and do Schilthorn > Grauseeli > Wasenegg Ridge > Bryndlii > Murren -- this keeps you up on the ridge, as opposed to on the side of the ridge going to Rotstockhutte. I prefer going downhill from Schilthorn to Murren instead of up, as then you are walking towards the main views. But it's a cardio vs. knees trade off. Typically we do Birg > Grauseeli > Wasenegg Ridge > Bryndlii > Murren to save the extra downhill from Schilthorn on the knees.
