Mary Ann, you could go to the Swiss rail site, sbb.ch.en to get some ideas of where to go and how long a train trip you'd want to take. I tried Lausanne, which takes about 2 hours with a change in Montreux so if you don't mind a 2-hour one-way trip, Lausanne would be nice one day and Montreux another. With a map in hand (or online), the rail site and maybe a guide book or two to figure out what there is to do in each town, village or city, you could figure out if you're interested in traveling that far on a day trip.
