Our group will be in the Ticino/Southern Switzerland area this September and we'd like to experience a traditional "grotto" restaurant. We'd love to hear about your favorites and recommendations! :-)
We went to Grotto Valmaggese a couple weeks ago and really enjoyed it. It is in the Michelin Guide as a Bib Gourmand (lower priced), primarily because they offer a daily lunch menu at a good price. You can also order a'la carte.
The most interesting we saw (we were in Ticino for a week) was one on Lake Lugano called Il Grotto dei Pescatori. It actually has a dedicated stop on the ferry. It hadn't opened for the season yet, so can't speak to the quality, but the setting and overall look of it from the water was amazing.
Thanks, History Traveler! I saw pics of Grotto Pescatori and it looks really fun! We won't be getting over to Lugano, unfortunately, but we will be taking the Centovalli train from Domodossola up to Locarno and there appear to be quite a few grotti along that route. If the schedule works for us (and if we're brave enough) we could hop off the train and have lunch in one of the villages and then hop back on, or we could find a grotto near Locarno. Hoping for some tips!
Here's our trip report if it helps with your overall planning.
Hah! I already had your trip report open in another window. Great minds think alike! Thank you! :-)
