Grindewald First and Mannlichen Hikes in One Day

Hoping for some insight on this one. Coming from Murren as our base where we will be staying...can we do both the hike to Lake Bachalpsee "The Alpine Lake" in Grindewald First, and the hike to Mannlichen in one day?

We were thinking of taking transportation to Grindewald from Murren (still have to figure that out, we have the Berner Oberland Pass) in the morning, doing the hike to Lake Bachalpsee, then hitting Mannlichen/Klein Scheidegg on the way back to Murren. We are setting this "two destination" hike for the best weather day when we are there to take full advantage of the views. Thoughts/suggestions...

Yes, that will work; we did almost the same thing last September with our son’s family. We left our apartment in Mürren by train and cablecar down to Lauterbrunnen, rode the little train to Wengen, and took the cablecar up to Mannlichen first. I love riding that cablecar UP; down not so much. At Mannlichen we spent over an hour at the playground for our 11-year-old grandkids, as we had done the hike to Kleine Scheidegg with them before. So we rode the gondola down to Grindelwald instead of doing the hike to Kleine Scheidegg.

You can do the hike and then either take the train down to Grindelwald Grund, or walk a bit further up to Eigergletscher and ride the Eigergletscher Express gondola down to Grindelwald Grund (which I would choose, personally).

From Grindelwald Grund you walk or take the bus through the village to the First lift. by now it might be lunchtime. You could find a place as you walk through town, or you could do as we did—-ride the First lift up to mid-station Bort and have lunch on the terrace at Berghaus Bort hotel and restaurant.

The kids wanted to ride Trottibikes from here but there were none available til later, so we got back on the lift, rode to the top and hiked to Bachalpsee, then they rode down to the Trottibikes-bikes and my husband and I stayed on the lift and rode all the way down to town.

We traveled back to Mürren by train on the valley route, ending at Lauterbrunnen, and then cablecar and train back to our apartment in Mürren. It was a great day!

Yes, you can, given enough energy.

From Mürren, take the train to Grütschalp then the cable car to Lauterbrunnen and the train to Grindelwald. Walk to the First cable car base station and ride up. Take your hike.

Return to Grindelwald on the cable car, then to the train station where you take the train a very short way to Terminal where you can catch the cable car to Männlichen. Hike to Kleine Scheidegg. Return to Lauterbrunnen via Wengen by train and make you way back to Mürren.

There are various combinations and routes you can use such as taking the cable car to Stechelberg from Mürren and the bus to Lauterbrunnen or taking the train to Wengen and the cable car to Grindelwald. Once you are there you can scope out the options. Or you can play with the routing on the SBB app, which you should have on your phone.

It will be a longish day with about 3.5 hours of hiking plus all the transportation.

Editing to add Lola’s response is a great example of how many options there can be to stitch a very full day together using the excellent transportation system. Hope you are getting a Berner Oberland Regional Pass!
