Grindelwald, Murren and Wengen? Need help planning :)

We will be staying in Grindelwald for 8 days next spring. We’ve been before, and loved the particular place we were staying with an unobstructed view of the mountain, set away from the town.
We didn’t have a chance to explore the area at all, and I know there’s so much to do, but it’s so confusing to me.

We plan on taking First, and doing some hiking, and would love to get recs on the activities up there like firniculurs, etc.

But we’d also like to explore the other small villages in the area, and wondering how we’d get to Murren and Wengen, and how long does it take to get there? Please help me visualize this....

Should we stay part of our time in those areas, or just have Grindelwald as home base and do day trips? We don’t know much about these areas other than they’re very popular, but we LOVED Grindelwald, because of our particular location, but would be open to others.

I would not split my time between locations. They are all close together. And the travel times you can find (as always) on www.sbb.ch

You might want to get the Berner Oberland Regional Pass (and the Half Fare Card). Then just explore. Going to Wengen for example there are three routes you can take, so why not for example take the cable cars over the Männlichen, and return by train... Once you have a pass you just hop on and off at leisure and can treat cable cars as public transport.

Around Grindelwald....
- Bus to Grosse Scheidegg, walk to First, cable car down.
- Cable car to First, walk to Faulhorn, walk down to Bussalp, take the Bus down. (Yes, there is a Bus to Bussalp :-)
- Visit the Gletscherschlucht.
- Pfingsteg cable car and the toboggan track.

Then the usual supsects: Männliche, Kleine Scheidegg, and if you want even Jungfraujoch.

Then on the other side of the mountain: Wengen, Lauterbrunnen, Murren.

You will not be bored for 8 days.

If you get the Berner Oberland Regional Pass this is valid all the way to Bern and Luzern, so if you hit a bad weather day just head there.

It seems obvious, but have you yet tried Google Maps? Plug in your start point and end point, select Public Transport, and find the route(s).

My first stay in Grindelwald was in a tent on the edge of town next to a creek of rushing water fed from the glaciers above. The view of the mountains above town is spectacular.
The hiking in Spring really depends on how long it’s been since the snow has melted away. In early May some hiking trails may still have some snow or they may be muddy. Keep that in mind if you’re going in April or the first half of May.
Getting from Grindelwald to Lauterbrunnen takes less than one hour by train. Lauterbrunnen to Murren takes about 20 minutes; Lauterbrunnen to Wengen about 10 minutes.
I agree you don’t need to change locations but transport adds up fast so you will want to buy a regional train pass or a half-fare card depending on your plans.
