Grindelwald info.

Hi. We are driving from the Zurich airport to our hotel in Lauterbrunnen. ( going to Germany later). We’re going to drive and park in the Grindelwald terminal parking and try to do the glacier walk and phingstegg, as these seem doable before we check in our hotel? I am just confused on which stops on the bus through town do we take to get to either of these places. I know we take a funicular to phingstegg, bot from which bus stop? Thank you.

To find these locations using SBB enter:

Grindelwald Terminal - Grindelwald, Pfingsteggbahn (this is the name of the bus stop) and for the glacier walk use Grindelwald, Gletscherschlucht. The same bus goes to both locations (bus #122).

If you use the SBB app you can quickly look up the timing of your connections once you are ready to start your journey. It will show you exactly where to catch the bus from the Grindelwald Bahnhof and you can now also now toggle between a map or a list version of your journey (this is a newer feature in the app).

There is parking at the Pfingsteggbahn station but it fills up very early.

You take a cable car up to Pfingstegg, not a funicular.

Have you checked in to what the rental car international drop off fees are for your plan? When we do the mountains Switzerland combined with Germany, we use the trains/cable cars for Switzerland, train to the German border and then get a car. It saves often over $1000 in drop off fees. A car really isn’t useful in the alps, as you just end up driving around trying to find challenging and often expensive parking and then still paying for the mountain transport. It adds a ton to your transportation costs.

If you’re insistent on a car, park it long term in Lauterbrunnen and just take the trains/cable cars everywhere and don’t try to hassle with the parking and traffic congestion. Lauterbrunnen & Grindelwald suffer extremely from car traffic because of people thinking they need to drive everywhere when the area is built to be enjoyed by public transportation. Even most of the locals don’t have cars.

There is a car rental place in Lindau right on the border of Germany. If you want to drive in Germany, train to Lindau-Reutin after your time in Switzerland and rent there for the rest of your trip.
