Grindelwald Hotel

My husband and I will be staying in Grindelwald for 5 nights. Does anyone have a great hotel recommendation in Grindelwald. Looking to stay by the train station and would like a nice hotel with a balcony with a view. I know Rick Steves does not recommend staying here, but we have decided this is the best location for us. Thank you all for any suggestions.

Hotel Derby is the closest to the train station, but would be too close for my tastes.

A 5-minute walk toward the village will take you to Hotel Cabana, highly rated and offering superior rooms with balcony and Eiger view. This would have been my choice for a return to Grindelwald (first visit we stayed at the Alte Post which is a long walk away). But we ended up spending more time in Mürren instead of moving to Grindelwald.

Other options would be nearby Hotel Belvedere, or Hotel Caprice which is below the station. But Cabana would be my personal pick if I wanted to be close to the train station.

Well, I am not sure why RS does not recommend Grindelwald, but we just spent a week there in late March so husband could do some Spring skiing. It is a lovely village, not my cup of tea for shopping, fancy dining, or five star hotels, but just perfect for a quaint and reasonable getaway in the mountains of Switzerland.

Yes, we stayed at the Derby Swiss Quality Hotel--it was fantastic for him as he was wearing ski boots and carrying skis, and the train was a two minute walk away (the ski resort is down one train stop from the town). I like the hotel because it was large enough to be roomy and comfortable, and it was decorated in the Alpen style. Our hotel room prices were also very affordable for Switzerland. The only thing we really missed was an indoor swimming pool on the property!

We had a wonderful delicious included breakfast every morning, and the hotel has three different unique restaurants. Our room in the back had a balcony, was pretty quiet, and had a gorgeous view of all the mountains. We slept with the windows/balcony door open a few times.

There are many other hotels in the area, some a bit of a walk, and we did eat dinner in a few, as we did not do the inclusive dining at our hotel so we could be more flexible. If I wanted to splurge, I might have chosen the Belvedere in Grindelwald, but since we are headed to Zermatt this December, I have to save my pennies for that ultra-expensive ski resort!
