Grindelwald for a week, then transport to Rome

After spending a week in Grindelwald, we're (my 14yo daughter & me, 61yo dad) traveling to Rome. On the Rome2Rio site, there's a train route mapped out, 3 transfers, aprox 9 hours, leaves Grindelwald at 6:47am & arrives in Rome 2:49pm. Total cost for both of us 410.00USD. Grindelwald>Interlaken>Spiez>Milan>Rome. I think 205.00/PP is reasonable, & I like the idea of arriving in Rome mid-day, as well as not having to wake up super early.

I really don't know yet if we'll have some sort of rail/travel pass while in Grindelwald. I'm suspecting we will. If we did, would it behoove us to use the pass at least until Spiez, & just purchase Spiez>Rome tix? We'll also need transport when arriving in Zurich at the beginning of the week to get to Grindelwald. Any Swiss travel pass info anyone could relay to me would be much appreciated - this is a long 6 week trip, Grindelwald is week 2 of 6. I'm not necessarily looking for the cheapest options, but more bang for the buck, taking cost, time, usefulness, ease & quality of travel into consideration.

I guess this is a 2 part question:
1. Is train the best way to get to Rome?
&
2. Would we be better off getting Swiss rail passes, & using those to travel from Zurich to Grindelwald, Grindelwald to Spiez (before departing for Rome, as well as day trips for the week we'll be in Grindelwald.

ETA - I just looked up Swiss Travel Pass. Six day pass would cost us 474.00USD for both so - If I used that for the 1st 6 days of the trip, & then on day 7 (travel day to Rome) I purchased the Rome2Rio trip for 410.00, total for the 2 of us, with all travel being covered, would be 875.00 total for our week. We'd have our transportation from Zurich to Grindelwald covered, all our day trips and our transport from Grindelwald to Rome covered & paid for going with this idea. Seems like a good deal, any opinions - agreeable or contrary would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance.

We stayed in Lauterbrunnen and rode trains, cable cars, trams, etc. in the same area where you are heading. Trying to figure out the Swiss Travel Pass and other Berner Oberland passes gets really confusing. We just went to the SBB office in the airport terminal in Zurich and the helpful staff there guided us on what to purchase. It was good to have a pass because then you just jump on whatever transport you are using (I believe that Jungfrau and Schilthorn cost extra).

Gorgeous area!

Do not use Rome2Rio for this. Use reputable train sites.
When are you going? Important, as some rail routes have interruptions this summer.

Please don't use the Rome2rio website to book tickets. They are neither accurate nor complete. They are, however, very good at showing the various transportation options.

Go to the Swiss rail website: https://www.sbb.ch/en. Input Grindelwald and Roma Termini as your start and stop points, and the date and time of travel.

Note that if you have a Swiss Travel Pass you only will need tickets for the Italian part of your Grindelwald - Rome trip. So in that case what you should do is:
- Look up Grindelwald - Rome on www.sbb.ch. Suppose you like the look of the 10:47 departure. That puts you on the EC from Spiez to Milano.
- In the trip details click on the EC service to see its details. Note the time that it calls at Domodossola, which is the "border" between SBB and Trenitalia. In this case this is 13:17
- Now just book the 13:17 Domodossola to Rome on www.trenitalia.com

Till Domodossola you travel on your Swiss Travel Pass, and from there on you use your Trenitalia Ticket.

You don't say when your trip is, so options/advise could vary.

Definitely don't use Rome2Rio, it's not always accurate. Use SBB.ch/en and TrenItalia for accurate info.

If you're spending a week in Grindelwald, you'd be better off getting the Half Fare Card + Family Card (your daughter will be free) + the 6 day reduced fare Jungfrau Travel Pass. The Swiss Travel Pass doesn't include most of the mountain activities you're going to want to do, while the JTP will, so your math above at 875 is not correct, as you'll end up having to pay supplements on a bunch of things with only the STP. You can then also use the Half Fare card to get a discount on your travel as far as Domodossola.
