We plan to go up Grindelwald First on June 25. Should I get tickets now or wait till I get there depending on the weather? We are only riding the cable car and not doing any extra excursions and I want to make sure we are able to get tickets. Also, are there stops along the way to acclimate to avoid altitude sickness? Thank you so much.
Easily get tickets the day you take cable car… two stops if you want to get off before the summit.
Get them right before you go that morning and know the weather app (MeteoSwiss) and First webcam up there shows it will be worthwhile. But don’t wait to get a ticket in person there at the cable car station or you’ll wait in 2 lines.
First is barely above 7,000 ft in elevation. That’s less than a pressurized airplane cabin, so if you are flying to Switzerland you will have already experienced that altitude. Know that if you get off at middle stations you’ll have to wait in line again to continue going back up, as the cable cars get completely full down at the bottom station and it can take a while for an empty one to show up at the middle stations to get on for going back up. Going down is easier.
Also, are there stops along the way to acclimate to avoid altitude sickness?
Another thing to keep in mind is that you're not ascending directly from sea level to 2,184 meters—Grindelwald, your starting point, is already at an elevation of 1,034 meters.
