Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen in one day

Hi,

My husband and I will be traveling to Switzerland in end of June and have 3-4 days in Interlaken. We are staying at a hotel in Interlaken and plan to use that as our base for travel to Jungfrau region. We will be reaching Interlaken in the noon on day 1 and plan to do Lake Brienz cruise. Day 2, we plan to do Mt. Titlis. For Day 3, we want to take the train (quite early in the morning) to Grindelwald and do First-Lake Bachalpsee hike and then go to Lauterbrunnen from Grindelwald by train, see Trummelbach falls and walk around in the valley. Do you guys think the day 3 itinerary is do-able if we start early and what are the things we need to consider to go with the plan, suggestions please. If this is not a good plan, please suggest a better itinerary (we don't mind easy-moderate hike) to do in Lauterbrunnen which will get us better views of Eiger and the valley.
Thank you!

I would skip Titlis because it is too far away for a day trip and because there are fantastic peaks much closer to Interlaken. Instead, the Schilthorn is much closer and would take much less time. It also offers great hiking opportunities on the way down.

I would also recommend staying in Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, Murren, or Grindlewald rather than in Interlaken. These places are far more beautiful than Interlaken. You'll understand when you get there.

Fasteddie is absolutely right. Don't stay in Interlaken. I'd also skip the Brienz cruise unless clouds obscure the mountains. I normally stay in Lauterbrunnen, Murren, or Grindelwald for a week, and I still can't get in all the great hikes. Click on my name and you'll find responses to others where I give 10 great hikes with great views of the mountains, plus maps.

I will be traveling to Geneva as well, unfortunately for only 2-3 days, in early August. I would like to take my son up a mountain similar to Mt Pilates near Lucerne. Is there something similar to that in the Geneva area? Also, what are some must sees in Geneva?

Regarding Trummelbach Falls...I thought the drive there was beautiful, but not worth the time stopping and going to the falls. That's just my opinion. I wanted to see the scenery, villages etc.

Thanks!

@fastEddie @shoe Thank you for your replies and suggestions. We'll stay in Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen instead of Interlaken (we are looking out for hotels now). The day we reach Grindelwald (day 1) is June 30 and heavy showers are predicted :( Do you recommend us trying to do Bachalpsee hike that day (with clouds and rain) or something leisure? For Day 2, we are planning for Schilthorn, Murren. Lauterbrunnen valley and falls on day 3. Day 2 and 3( July 1 and 2) seem to be little sunny.

Nobody can predict accurately the weather in the mountains more than a day or two out, let alone 2 weeks.

The mountains have their own microclimate so if you are looking at bigger towns in the flat lands what you see is unlikely to be accurate.

Generally speaking the mountains start clear and sunny in the morning, by 11 or 12 the heat has caused moist air to rise and form clouds around the peaks, and in the afternoon sometimes the clouds merge and form overcast or a rain shower. Heavy rain and thunderstorms, if they arrive are often in the evening and night.

But you never know.

I agree with other posters that staying in Interlaken is a mistake, and with the limited time you have I would skip Trummelbach falls. (unless the weather is really bad)

To address your original question day 3 - if you take the lift down from First then train up to Klein Schidegg you could do the hike between Mannlichen and Klein Scheidegg. I've never done it in that direction. I always stay in the Lauterbrunnen valley then take the gondola up from Wengen to Mannlichen, then hike to Klein Schiedegg from there, but it is relatively level so I don't think it matters much which direction you hike it.

I think Trummelbach Falls is a great way to spend an hour on a hot afternoon in you're already in the valley. Imagine it being a blazing hot day and then entering a cavern at a gloriously cooling 45 F degrees!

@Niger @Jill @FastEddie Thank you for your suggestions. We'll leave the weather/rains to our luck :) We'll be staying in Lauterbrunnen and will do the valley with the falls on day 3. We are interested in visiting Trummelbach falls. On rest of the days we'll visit Grindelwald and hike bachpsee, Schilthorn, Murren trails.
