We are trying to figure out how best to do train travel with our grandchildren in Switzerland this summer. We were planning on a Swiss travel pass for 15 days, but looks like our grandkids could not travel free with us on either s family card or a childrens co-travel card. Any suggestions? Can grandkids be included on a half-fare card??
I don’t know if Rick Steves still does this but when I took a Girl Scout group to Switzerland several years ago I called them and discussed rail options. And they gave me some great options in keeping in mind of these girls were my children so I wasn’t limited to some kind a family pass. I can’t remember what the deal was we got for the girls but it was very very good.
It might be worth calling to see if they can help you. I bought the pass from them and that was the same price as buying it from the Swiss rail people
I believe that if you have a half-fare card and a valid ticket, you can use the Co-travel card with grandchildren. Depending on your planned itinerary, this could be a better value option. However....you can also get a 50% discount on the Swiss Travel Pass for children traveling with you, even if you can't use the family card or co-travel card. So, for example the 15 day pass for them would be 215 francs each, which is a pretty great deal! If purchasing online, you simply add the grandkids as passengers, but don't check the box "The child is accompanied by a parent and can use the Swiss Family Card" next to their name(s) - when you continue to the next screen, the 50% discount is automatically applied to the passengers under 16. You can of course also buy the passes once you get to Switzerland.
