Good central location to stay in Switzerlans

My husband and I are going to Switzerland early May 2024 for about 1 week. We'd like to have a 'base' hotel to stay at nightly and take day trips (so we're not taking our luggage and unpacking every day or 2).

When we fly out, we leave from Zurich airport. I've read Lucerne is a good 'central' place to stay, looking to confirm this and if anyone has any hotel suggestions or another good 'central' location to stay at and travel from via train. Thank you in advance :-)

Luzern could work. But rather than a hotel for a week, what about an apartment rental? More room to spread out, and the ability to "eat in" would be less spendy than a hotel and I am sure you could find a place to stay that is as lovely as a high-end hotel.

Lucerne would be a good choice as it's a beautiful city, in a fairly central location, has some good day trip possibilities and reasonably close to Zürich for the flight home.

LOVE Luzern…….try Hotel Balances…….right on the river next to the old town bridge and serves delicious meals out on their balcony overlooking the river. We got a room on the top floor and had a view from our terrace everyday of this lovely city!

Hi, looked @ hotel balances and it's around $350 Euro a night for May. Any other hotel suggestions? Assuming Lucerne is the best central location? Other ideas for hotels? Thank you :)

Are you thinking of staying in Luzern and exploring around there for a week, or do you mean that you want a central base from which you can explore more of Switzerland?

If you want to do some day trips to other areas of the country, then I wouldn’t really see Luzern as being a central location to do that from. If this is more what you were envisioning, then take some time looking at SBB app or website to see travel times to the different areas you want to see and then compare that with somewhere like Bern, where you can go to: Luzern 1 hour, Lausanne 1 hr 13 min, Wengen 1 hr 34min; three great day trips into very different areas each time.

It doesn't have to be Bern, but it seems to be a good starting point is knowing what day trips you hope to do and see if there is a central location from which to do that.
