Golden Pass to Lucerne vs. Gruyeres

So,we currently have a reservation on hold for the Golden Pass Train from Montreux to Lucerne on June 2nd (the day after construction is complete but I am starting to second guess this trip as it appears it is going to take 8 hours. We originally had wanted to do the Chocolate Train but it does not run on Saturdays that time of year.

What I am wondering is the feasibility of going from Montreux to Gruyeres, visiting the cheese factory (and possibly going to the chocolate factory in Broc) and then getting a faster train to Lucerne. Or should we definitely do the Golden Pass Train Route?

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Mark

I took the Golden Pass train from Luzern to Montreux. It was beautiful and I was there in the winter and the weather wasn't the best. I would imagine that in the summer, that train ride would be phenomenal I have not been to Gruyeres so I can't speak to that..

Yes, you can get back to Luzern from Gruyeres in 3 hours with a single connection at Palezieux. Train leaves at 6:05 pm or 7:00 pm.

If you go to Gruyères, be sure to go up into the very charming old town of Gruyères, up on top of the mountain there. You can sample and buy all kinds of Gruyère cheeses at little cheese shops in the village, and get quiche or fondue in cafes, all made with Gruyère cheese and Gruyère cream. And you can visit the pretty castle up there. They also have a very nice Heimatwerk shop which sells authentic Swiss crafts.
I skipped the cheese factory. It's down below the town, and is in a big parking lot that accommodates all the tour buses for the factory. As I recall, there's a public transit bus that shuttles you from down below, up to the village.
