We are going onBest of Switzerland tour 7/31.. what is the best map. Our map fromGAS doesnot show enough.
Thanks
If travelling by rail (or planning for doing so) there is this one online: https://myswissalps-doc.r.worldssl.net/docs/default-source/rail-network-maps/swisstravelsystem.pdf
Even if not going by rail, it will show you the relative locations of everything.
If you want an on-line zoomable totpgraphic map (with mountains shown, very important for Switzerland) see here: http://map.schweizmobil.ch/ You can zoom and print out any areas you want.
For a paper map, bets to wait until you gte to Switzerland and buy one at a bookshop, plenty available.
Good local footpath (hiking maps) are available at any bookshop at a scale of 1:50,000
Google maps.
Google maps are not very good for Europe. The colour scheme is bad, grey on white, very difficult to distinguish. They do not use different colours to distinguish major and minor roads. But, worst of all they just show roads, and all the same width. They are designed for driving, and nothing else.
They do not show rail lines until you zoom to a very close; in towns they do not show width and layout of squares, or pedestrianised areas properly. And in rural area they do not show hills or any topology.
For rural areas I would use local mapping, as it is designed for the local situation. In Switzerland the site I listed before: http://map.schweizmobil.ch/
For urban areas, especially as a tourist, I recommend OpenStreetMap: http://www.openstreetmap.org
