Going North of Milan in Winter...

Daughter is studying abroad in Noethern Italy until Dec. I will be heading over at that time to spend 2 weeks traveling with her over winter break before we head home to California first week of Jan.
Our plan is to head North of Milan.
Heading from cold to freezing...Prague first and working our way back down, Austria, Switzerland and back to Milan.
Wanting to travel by train and enjoy our time together making it a trip of a lifetime.
I realize traveling at this time of the year that in and of itself will be a chilling experience! Brrrr...
But if we're going to be there at that time we really want to take in the beautiful Christmas Markets etc...
Any suggestions on where to stay? (Remember it's an adventure but we need to be able to walk from train to our accomodations)
Any suggestions on how long to plan to stay in each place? (We will have about 12 to 14 days total)
Thinking possible stops, From Prague: Salzburg, Liechtenstein, Zurich, Berne, Lucerne, Milan
Thanks in advance for your input.

Skip Liechtenstein, nothing to see. The trains from Salzburg to Zürich go via Liechtenstein, but don't even stop there!
If you have time, add a stop in Munich (München). If you are training from Prague to Salzburg you probably go via Munich anyway.
On the section from Bern to Luzern (local spellings), don't take the fast route, instead go via Interlaken and the Brünig pass route. This is a very scenic route with lots of snow in winter.

Christmas markets in Germany and Switzerland are open from the last weekend in November to midday on Christmas Eve (24th December)

Thanks Chris,
Great info. ~ We were wondering about Munich, will definitely look into it. Thinking about doing Vienna from Prague and then heading to Salzburg. Any thoughts?
Any suggestions on where to look for accommodations. We are on foot once we arrive in all places so convenience, comfort and price are a consideration.
Thanks in advance.

When I'm looking for hotels of other accommodation, I like to go to the official town tourist site. This usually lists all accommodation in a town or city, and not just those who pay the most for advertising.

A tip: In many countries, the official website for a town or city is called {place name}.{country code}
This is usually the official site for information if you live there, but it usually has a link or sub-section marked "tourismus" or "tourism" or something equally obvious.
For example, for Salzburg, I would start looking at salzburg.at
I just tried it (I wasn't cheating, I had never been to this site before, honest!). I then clicked on "tourismus" and I saw a link to "hotels in Salzburg", it worked!

muenchen.de also works, and has a link marked "hotels".
