Glacier Express vs Regular Train

Hello,
I need help deciding on train travel between Pontresina and Betten Talstation. Here are my two options:

1)Take the Glacier Express from Samedan to Brig and backtrack to Betten Talstation (we are staying in Betenalp).

2)Take the regular train (trying to figure out which stations to use) from Pontresina to Betten Talstation eliminating the need to backtrack.

I know RS does not recommend taking the regular trains because one has to change trains. I also believe the regular trains follow the same tracks as the Glacier Express. Is this true? Also, do we miss any of the best sights my taking the regular train?

Thanks for any insights.

Take a close look at the routing. Example: I see 2 departures @ 8:02, one has fewer connections and gets to Bettentalstation 1 hour sooner, but it uses the Vereina Tunnel to Klosters, a different routing than the Glacier Express. The other uses the same route as the Glacier Express.

Here is a map of the rail system so you can see the various routes:

I personally would not choose the Verein tunnel route via Klosters—-the other way is much more scenic.

The “backtrack” from Brig to Betten is only 16 minutes on the train, so not a big waste of time. You will have to wait for the next train, but can use the time in the station to buy snacks if you like. I seem to recall a pretty good bakery there.

If you do want to take the actual Glacier Express, it appears you have a choice. Take the Glacier Express to Brig, then a bus to Betten Talstation, or the Glacier Express to Andermatt, then Regional train to Betten Talstation.

Thanks for the ideas. I am having trouble finding the regional train that does not go through the tunnel.
I don't know why I didn't think of taking the GE to Andermatt and then the regional train. That makes sense.

Thanks all for your expertise.

When using the SBB journey planner, put "Filisur" in the Via box. Then you get the same route as the Glacier Express on the Albula rail line.

Has anyone taken the regional train on this route? What was your experience and would you do it again, or take the Glacier Express?
Thanks.

I have, both the Glacier Express route for the full length of Brig to Chur, in different segments, and the Bernina Express route from end to end.

I've never taken the fancy named trains with the hermetically sealed windows and fancy silverware - always the regular hourly trains.

Always loved my choice. I prefer to hang out with the grandmas who smile, laugh and growl in equal measure and the kids going to school. I have done sections of the Bernina Express route many times, and the whole thing and many other times elsewhere in the Engadin, but the Glacier Express route was definitely a once and done for me. I find the many hours of very similar views monotonous and boring.

Other folks I am sure feel the opposite.

I would note that on the IR train between Samedan and Chur, there is a note "FW", photographers viewing area.

With the regional trains, the connections are very easy to handle (they happen in very tiny stations) and provide an opportunity to stretch your legs. There are 3 connections if I remember correctly, in Reichenau-Tamins, Disentis and Andermatt. You need to pay attention not to miss Reichenau (but it is not a disaster, you can always change in Chur instead); the other two are the end of their respective regional train service. But I cannot deny that it is a slight annoyance with luggage. It depends on how much you are carrying, and on how well you can carry it!

Thanks for everyone's help. I think we will try the regional trains as we travel with one suitcase that is easy to handle.
