I'm currently planning a mid to end of September 2024 trip to Switzerland. One of the things on my husbands list is the Glacier Express but I've now read in several places that September is not a great time to take that trip. Lack of snow and "dark" vistas were specifically mentioned. Does anyone have any personal experience with taking the Glacier Express in later September? We are likely riding from Zermatt to Chur and then jumping off to head towards Lucerne if that makes any difference at all. TIA
Yes, late summer is known for its lack of snow. Is that why they call it summer? I don't really know what you mean by "dark" vistas. Was it a cloudy day when the writer traveled?
There are 3 Glacier Express departures in September, 7:52, 8:52, and 9:52. The first one terminates in Chur, the other 2 continue to St Moritz.
So I guess my question would be in your experience is the trip worth it in late summer? :)
We did the Bernina Express early September a few years back and the views were fantastic- deep blue skies, aqua reflecting glacier lakes, views for miles.
Good luck!
We did the Glacier Express in late September and it was great. We had lunch on the train. We had a beautiful sunny day and the scenery was beautiful.
Youtube is full of videos of all the well known Swiss train routes, look for some at various times of the year and watch. You might also decide to go in another direction, or perhaps to overnight in the middle.
I just did the Glacier Express on September 18th, 2023. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip. And it was a rainy, cloudy day. Obviously, I would have preferred it to be a beautiful and sunny day (like it was for 12 of my 15 days in Switzerland), but alas it was not to be that day. I also don't know what "dark" vistas are, but I saw nothing that I would call that on the Glacier Express or the Bernina Express or the Gotthard Panoramic Express. I found September 12-27 to be a wonderful time to visit Switzerland. I even got to see some fresh snowfall at the higher elevations in the Berner Oberland one day.
You guys are awesome. Thank you!!
