Getting up into Murren

I'm
So embarrassed to be asking this, because I thought I had this info Bookmarked. And for some reason my I-Phone won't do a Search on The Forum.

In a few days, we will be traveling from Pontresina to Murren. It will be a long travel day, but Murren will be relaxing. You all have suggested several train routes for the longest part of the journey, and I have that info.

Question- I think Interlaken Ost is the final
Train stop- Is that correct?
Then what?
I just reread the RS Guide and am confused. I thought you all had given me this info, so I apologize if I'm asking you to repeat. Is it a bus and lift? Or what?
Thanks so much!

From Interlaaken Ost there is another train to Lauterbrunnen, then a lift to Grütschalp, then another train to Mürren. It sounds complicated but I found it to be much easier when I was there.

Edited to add: There is another way to get there described in the RS guidebook, but I think above is easiest.

Another edit: Nigel makes an important note below about the train leaving Interlaaken Ost which I forgot (it’s been awhile...).

Min, thx. I'm getting the hang of several train changes since I've been here, and they do sound complicated until you just trust the Swiss to make things easy and efficient! Thx again.

Pat, you'll love it. Interlaken Ost is where you change to the smaller railroad service that takes you up the valley to Lauterbrunnen. From there, you have two ways to get to Mürren (besides hiking up the mountain). One is to take the funicular up to Grütschalp where you catch the short train that takes you across the mountain to Mürren. The other is to take the bus on to Stechelberg, where you can catch the gondola up the mountain (you'll see stop for Gimmelwald on the way) and the right into Mürren. So, the trip is a combination of multiple means, but I believe it is all covered under one ticket. None of this is remote or difficult to figure out once you see the terrain, or ask the friendly folks. From Mürren, you can look down and see both Stechelberg and Lauterbrunnen in the valley below.

Sorry for the wordy repeat, but I'll leave it for posterity.

from wherever to Interlaken Ost (was it Luzern?)

Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen. The train to Lauterbrunnen has two halves, front and back. They look the same. There is a sign on the door (and probably the platform, they expect people to be trying to figure it out) which will either say Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen. Get on the one to Lauterbrunnen. Don't get on the ones to Grindelwald. The train divides part way up the valley.

In Lauterbrunnen cross the road and take the gondola up the cliff to Grütschalp.

One stop to the top of the cliff. Get off the gondola/cable car and go up a short distance to the little train waiting for you.

The little train from Grütschalp to Mürren, the last stop.

If you don't want to go up the stairs into Mürren station you can follow the disabled route around the longer sloped route.

In each case you will likely be following a crowd. At any stage feel free to ask staff, "Lauterbrunnen" in the first case, "Mürren?" leaving to go up the cliff....

Sounds complicated, actually very straightforward, easy.

sorry, Stan,

One is to take the funicular up to Grütschalp

The funicular was replaced by a cable car/gondola in 2010.

I used to like it, but the cable car is good fun too and much faster, the stations are in the same place. It had to be replaced because of unstable ground.

Thanks Nigel. I was sure it was still a train in 2014 when we were there, but happy to be corrected.

Thanks to all. I don't remember any of this, so perhaps I didn't lose the info.
We have had such great weather so far ( Pontresina now), and I do hope it continues into Murren. We were rained out of the Jungfrau a few year back.
Your input is priceless!

Happy to contribute, although in the back of my mind I thought Nigel would probably respond (as he did so eloquently) just wasn’t sure if he’d see it (or still be up at that hour!).

Hope your good weather continues!

In Murren the train station is at one end of town, the lift via Gimmelwald to Schilthorn is at the other end. (Luckily, flat road in between and it's a pretty small town.) If your hotel is closer to one than the other, that might affect your choice of routes.
