Tentative Plans: Munich for 3 nights. Rent car leaving Munich to Rothenburg one night then to Cochem for two night dropping car somewhere along the way -- where you suggest HELP - and getting onthe train to Lucerne two nights and then to Paris. Where should we drop the car and which city/where is the best way to train to Lucerne? I have been to websites but I can’t find routes – only schedules if you already know the cities but could be user error on my part Two of us travelling early/mid September.
Basically, you can get to Luzern from anywhere in Germany that has a train station. Railroads are just like regular roads, they are all interconnected. Maybe a better question is: where is there a rental car drop-off location (of the same brand I am renting from) that is handy to a train station?
Offhand, if you are in Cochem, you will get a train down the Mosel to Koblenz, then a train down the Rhine to Basel, then a train to Luzern. Afterward, Luzern to Basel, then to Paris.
Thanks for your reply! I should have said that I am trying to get to Lucerne the quickest way. I could keep my car in Cochem and use it drive to another city and the catch the train to Lucerne instead of taking the train all the way . I don't want to spend 7 hours on the train. Any ideas for that? I'm new to all of this but it seems that some trains are faster than others - to use your analogy, a highway vs a two lane country road with lots of stoplights. I thought maybe driving to another town closer and then catching a train there would save me time of course I'd have to check for drop off or maybe I need to reevaluate what I do in btwn Munich and Lucerne
There are EC trains from Koblenz at 9:48 and 11:48 that will get you to Luzern in 5 hours and 17 minutes with a single train change along the way. You could also catch the same train in Mainz if that has a better rental drop off location.
