I am trying to get from Montreux to Chamonix on October 13, 2019. Apparently they must be doing repair work on train track. Can someone suggest an alternate route? Would I do better to catch a train to Geneva and then take a flixbus to Chamonix or is there a another reasonably priced train route?

Yes, they appear to have track work planned, but also a replacement bus for the relevant leg of the trip. You can still use the train/bus combo to make the trip in 3 hours with 3 connections. This route is covered by a Swiss Travel Pass and is quite scenic.
Looking Up Train Schedules and Routes Online gives you the Deutsche Bahn train schedule link and tips for using it. Or www.sbb.ch should yield similar results.

The train/combo is not available for the trip going through Martigny. There is work being done from Martigny-Vallorcine as well as from Vallorcine-Montreux. The Sbb website looks like you can take Train/bus/train but you can not. Every time slot is unavailable for Oct. 13 date.

I just checked the SBB app and I am able to buy a ticket to the border (Le Chatelard) without issue by train - bus - train, and I'm seeing the connections all the way to Chamonix.
