We have a trip planned August 30 to September 20. We arrive in Geneva on August 30. Our tour starts in Chamonix on 4th of September and we will be there for 3 nights. Checking with RIck Steves suggestions, he says go to Lausanne and not stay in Geneva.
I'm looking for suggestions of where to go for the few days before the 4th. suggestion of where to stay and what to do would be very helpful.

Well you need not stay in the immediate area given the excellent train system, but Lausanne-Vevey-Montreux is a gorgeous area and would certainly make for a nice few days.

I was only in Montreux a couple days, but I enjoyed the castle and the town. The vineyards at Vevey are lovely.

I would suggest Montreux or Vevey, and then continue to Chamonix via Martigny. The Martigny - Chamonix line is very scenic.
