Geneva to Ascona

Hi all,

My wife and I will be in Geneva for a few days, and we are planning to spend the end of our time in Ascona. I'm wondering if it makes sense to rent a car and drive there from Geneva, or if we're better off using the train? Has anyone made this drive?

The train drawbacks are that it seems to be 90+ minutes longer each way, and it wouldn't allow us to explore the area with flexibility if we wanted. Car drawbacks are that it's potentially a pain, and also that it's obviously more expensive.

Any thoughts? I've driven in Mexico and Mallorca in the past, so I'm not SO concerned about Swiss driving (unless I should be!), but just looking for general advice.

Thanks so much in advance!!

I'd say take the train. Go via Brig, Domodossola, and the scenic Centovalli rail line to Locarno. You can explore the Ticino area via post bus, or maybe rent a car for a day or 2 while you are there.
