Traveling in September for one week, in and out of Geneva. Please help with outdoor adventures possibly Annecy, Vevey as home for 3 nights each? We plan to stay in southern region as we visited B.O region last year. Please advise as to public transportation (which we prefer) or renting a car. Thank you in advance.
No knowledge of Annecy, but the Vevey area is well served by train.
I did not get to hike while in Montreux (my husband did--he said watch out for the donkeys), but I used these websites for research:

It would be a round about but very scenic loop if you get a bus from Geneva airport to Annecy (60 minutes). Then Annecy to Chamonix (90 minutes by bus); Then Chamonix through Vallorcene to Martigny in the Rhone Valley (90 minutes) and then on to Vevey (40 minutes). Annecy through Geneva to Vevey is 3 hours.
Trains run from Geneva to Annecy via Annemasse - not the most direct route but not bad and less traffic-addled than a bus. Plan on a 45-50 minute train ride, all told.
That said, the train to Vevey would backtrack through Geneva, so perhaps it's not the best option, but it's not bad.
Service on both lines is frequent.
Thank you all for the input!
