Geneva Switzerland to Stresa, Italy

We are staying with friends in Geneva, Switzerland for several days and then want to go to Stresa, Italy by train in 2025. The fastest train available. Do we need to buy tickets in advance, and do you recommend upgrading to first or second class tickets?? We'd like to reserve seats as I am 69 and my husband is 76. What do you do with your luggage? We will be traveling light. Maybe a 21" suitcase and a small backpack each. We are looking at the Regina Palace Hotel in Stresa and I think I read it's a 9 minute walk to that hotel from the train station. Is that accurate? Thank you!

That is a journey of roughly 4 hours and on the current schedule there are a few times each day it can be done with a single change, at Domodossola. But maybe the l2025 schedule will be different.

You handle your own luggage on and off the train. You can put it on the rack at the end of the car, in the overhead area, or sometimes in the A-shaped space between 2 seat backs, on the floor.

Google says it is a 9-minute walk to your hotel, and likely mostly downhill.

Lola, Thank you for your reply. Is it best to prebook tickets and does first or second class provide more space for your luggage? How safe is luggage in those end bins? I’m guessing if we’re just taking 21” suitcases and small backpacks we can fit them above our seats or on our laps. It looks like we will be boarding first in Geneva so how far in advance to arrive to find our train number and platform? Thanks again.
