FYI--For those heading to Lucerne

Some great ideas in this video:

I’m adding the Musegg Wall and towers to my list for next June. I can’t believe I haven’t seen those yet.

And Pilatus, I still don’t find it appealing for some reason. I have it on my list though.

In the video you can see the new train cars for Rigi.

Hi Carrie,

Thank you for posting a link to this video. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. I have been to Lucerne many times but never stayed there. The video brought back good memories.

I went up to Pilatus on my first trip to Switzerland in 1982. The train cars were much different than the new ones. I enjoyed the trip but don't feel a need to go again.

I have been up the Rigi twice. I planned to go up again this past May but my husband and I chose to do something different that day. We enjoy the views so much on the trip up and back.. In 2017 we traveled up from Vitznau, walked around, traveled down the other side and right back up again, then down to Vitznau again. In May we ate at the same restaurant in Vitznau twice. And before taking the boat back to Gersau (our lodging was outside Gersau a few miles) I stopped at the grocery store near the station and bought a bag of Paprika chips and thought of you!

In the 90s I toured the transport museum. I found it quite interesting. I would tour it again sometime. They do have their own train stop. On my way to Zurich before flying home I shared a train with a large group of students who had been staying at our hostel.

I always enjoy your trip reports Carrie. I look forward to your Switzerland 2024 report.

Carrie, thx for posting. I've been up to Mt Rigi in both the winter and spring. It's magical covered in fresh snow against blue skies. Safe travels!

If Pilatus doesn't appeal to you, don't worry about it. I went up on my 3rd trip to Luzern, so it wasn't a priority for me either. I did enjoy it very much. Other than Rigi, other mountain excursions are Stanserhorn (ride on top of the cable car if you want, very stable and safe feeling despite the pictures), or Stoos, which has the super cool funicular that goes straight up. From Stoos there is a cable car up to Fronalpstock, which has possibly the best views of Lake Lucerne. Or if you don't care to go up a mountain, then take a boat on the lake. It's your trip. You do you.

Hi travelergirl, I’m happy to hear that you tried the paprika chips. Still a trip favorite of mine and my sister. I have also been up Rigi twice and next June I’ll make it 3 times. Definitely one of my favorites. And I might take some time to walk around Vitznau this next time. I will also take my 2nd trip to Stanserhorn thanks to Pat who got me hooked. 😊 I should still have time for Pilatus too. But right now it’s on my “if I have time” list. I always have the transportation museum on my “rainy day” list, but have been so lucky so far weather-wise.

Hi Pat, I definitely need to see Switzerland in the winter one of these days.

Hi Nickelini, Pilatus is one of those things that is mentioned so often here on the forum that I almost want to check it out just to see what all the fuss is about. 😊

I have only been to Mt. Pilatus, but I watched a different very good video on Mt. Rigi. The trip from Lucerne to Mt. Rigi is much more scenic via Weggis and return through Vitznau. While the boat ride to the cogwheel train to Pilatus is great, the scenery on the cogwheel train is diminished.

Pilatus is about 1,100 feet higher that Rigi and the views reflect it. While I enjoyed the trip to Pilatus, I would choose Rigi because of its scenic journey if I had to do it again and the fact there were Weggis and Vitznau to explore along the way.

Hi Threadwear, I have found that I much prefer the lower elevation mountains as I find them more suited for walking. I’d take Rigi and Männlichen over Schilthorn and Jungfrau any day.
