FYI Current situation in Bern 6 Sept

Hi everyone. Some info for those who plan to travel to Bern soon. When we were there yesterday none of the colorful flags I see in videos and pics were out. All empty flag poles. Clock tower show was just one rooster crow not nearly as elaborate as I have seen in videos.

Construction everywhere. Not the car free area I thought it would be. Worker vechiles buses and trams everywhere. Hard to walk with vehicles whizzing past all the times. Construction at Munster but can still enter. I believe it was the door to the left of main entrance we could enter. Doors closed so try handle to see if locked to find open one. I bought some great gift cards in Munster gift shop. U have to put items on a p!ate and slide under p!astic window to lady. Be sure to check out public restrooms around back of Munster near Park entrance. These were a highlight for my bro in law. Space age like he says. They were free.

Check out Gov building if u have time. Not far from Munster. I was surprised at lack of visible security. Only saw a few police and we could walk right up to it.

Eat lunch at train station if you're watching your budget. Our lunch at Kramers was fabulous but cost 96 chf for 2 steak bowls and 1 chicken salad.

No crowds or Americans. We still loved our visit despite the above disappointments.

A note for those using Swiss travel pass. Train conductors so far all check ID. No problem showing them photo copy of passport picture page so we can leave original in money belt.

Off to lauterbrunnen later this am!!!!!!!! Behind excited to see "real Switzerland"

Carrie , thx for the Bern info . Maybe we will train down to Montreux one of our days there. We are on way to Murren. Where are you staying? I've forgotten . Weather forecast is not good for end of week- hope it changes .
Safe travels.

I haven't been to Bern but Lauterbrunnen is definitely going to be amazing for you! Lauterbrunnen itself is very small but quaint. Cows RIGHT there in town just off the main street.

If you go into any mountain village though you'll be in for a real treat! The mountains there are gorgeous!

Enjoy and keep the updates coming! :-)
