Thinking of heading to Andermatt for a couple of days (in May) before starting a tour in Lucerne. Has anyone been to Andermatt? Is the rail the best way to get there from Zurich? Is Andermatt a good place to visit at the beginning of summer? Recommendations? Thoughts? Thanks!
as far as a good place in May - what do you want to do there in your couple of days? Hike in the snow? Ride trains? Have you ever been to Switzerland before?
Yes, you can get to Andermatt by train from Zurich.
You may find it both a bit early and a bit late in May.
I've never stayed there, just passed through. Perhaps others will have answers from actually staying there.
Andermatt is one of the snowiest places in the Alps. May is after the main ski season but still ski-touring season, it is not summer there. It will be very quiet, and the Gemsstock cable car will be closed.
Also, the town itself has improved in recent years but still feels a bit soulless to me.
In May, I would rather spend some time in the Appenzell region. Then take the scenic Voralpen Express from St Gallen to Luzern to join the tour.
