We are a party of four adults, one of whom is elderly but active, and three kids, ages, 10, 9, and 7. We have secured a home exchange in Fribourg for a week in July. My mom has booked two nights in Fussen to tour Neuschwanstein Castle. We will be taking the train from Fribourg to Fussen. I need suggestions for how to spend the remaining days. I'd like to visit Lucerne, maybe Gruyeres? My little girl loves animals so I'd like to show her some the cows, and the boys would certainly love to tour a chocolate site and sample.
Thanks for any suggestions.

We toured the Maison Cailler (Nestles) chocolate factory in Broc, near Gruyere, when we did a home exchange in western Switzerland. It was a lot of fun and I see on their website that they have chocolate making workshops now. We also visited the charming town of Gruyere.

Fribourg itself is a nice town. It is situated in a U-shaped bend in the river, which is in a gorge.
It has a unique attraction for everybody with a child’s sense of humour. Switzerland's only sh-t powered funicular down from the town to the river: http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/all-aboard-_fribourg-s-stinky-funicular/41721832
Bern is a nice day trip, quick and easy by train.
One day go up into the Berner Oberland by train.
