Four Days in Wengen with Kids - July 2025 - Itinerary Suggestions

Hello all, my family will be traveling to Switzerland in July without a car. My family includes my seven and 10 year old boys. I have already purchased two adult Jungfrau Travel 4-Day Passes, Swiss Half Fare Cards, and Two Swiss Family Cards for the children. We depart Lucerne early in the morning, via the Lucerne-Interlaken Panoramic Express, and we hope to arrive at our base in Wengen by 11:00 a.m., spending four nights. Our family loves to explore, hike, try local foods / drinks, and bike.

Day 1: Arrive in Wengen around 11:00 a.m. (from Lucerne), Explore Wengen and visit Lauterbrunnen (Waterfalls and possibly rent bikes)
Day 2: Jungfrau Morning / Grindelwald Afternoon
Day 3: Schlithorn Morning / Murren and Gimmelwald Afternoon
Day 4: Mannlichen
Day 5: Depart Wengen in morning

Thanks you for all your help and suggestions.

You really need to follow the weather and base your day's plans on the forecast, what you see out your window, and there are actually cameras at the summits to give you an idea of what is going on. In can be clear on one mountain top and totally socked in at another. You are looking at doing the mountains in the am which is generally the best given "typical" mountain weather. If you have a rainy/foggy day, consider the Lauterbrunnen waterfalls.

We didn't love Grindelwald, spent about an hour and then left. With your passes, you do have that flexibility, you might have some other ideas in your "back pocket".

Gimmelwald has a delightful brewery/restaurant on the edge of the mountain.

I wouldn’t plan to go to both Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn.

From Jungfraujoch, we took the Eiger Express down to Grindelwald Terminal. Brought a tote bag for our extra clothes and stored it in the station. Then continued to First. Rode the mountain carts.

Be sure to visit some of the playgrounds. We (6 adults) had fun at the one at Allmendhubel. Stunning views.

In Grindelwald, take the tram up to Pfingstegg. They have a toboggan run, zip line and the views are beautiful. Our kids and grandkids (7& 10) loved it. The playground at the top of the Mannlichen is wonderful and the Cow Hike from the top down toward Grindelwald was a lot of fun with cow bells to ring, an Alp horn to blow and other kid type activities spaced out along the hike. Last summer, outside on the glacier at the top of the Jungfrau there was a zip line and tubing rides, and they thought walking inside a glacier was really neat, again the kids had a great time. We did the waterfalls on a day it rained but if it’s not raining it’s still a good idea to wear raincoats. Also, there’s a public pool in Wengen that was good activity for the kids for a few hours on one of our very warm afternoons. And the marble runs. You can buy the large marbles at the Visitors information center.

With kids, I’d skip Jungfraujoch. It’s a long boring train ride in the dark up to a very crowded viewpoint that the kids will barely be able to see with all the crowds. I think they’d enjoy Schynige Platte a lot more with the open air cog train and kid’s trail.

If you’re arriving at 11, Mannlichen would make more sense on your arrival day so that you’re not backtracking.

Definitely prioritize your Schilthorn/Murren day for your best weather day. Biking the valley can be done on a cloudy day if needed. Use the MeteoSwiss app + local webcams and stay flexible with these days.

Day 1: Store luggage + Mannlichen (optional beautiful walk to Kleine Scheidegg and train back to Wengen or just enjoy the Royal Walk + playground and cable car back down) - Hotel Baren is good for dinner
Day 2: Schilthorn, Allmendhubel playground to Mürren via Flower Trail or Northface hike if you’re more into hiking (Suppenalp mountain hut for lunch), easy walk down to Gimmelwald (dinner)
Day 3: Schynige Platte
Day 4: Biking Lauterbrunnen Valley + option to go see Grindelwald if that’s important to you
Day 5: Depart Wengen in morning

Thank you all so much for the updates.
So with the four days / four nights in Wengen would it be too ambitious to experience Jungfraujoch, Schynige Platte, and Schilthorn? Or would you only pick two of the three?

Thanks again.

You could try to fit it in on my day 4 suggestion with Lauterbrunnen Valley, but I wouldn't prioritize it above any of the other things, only as a bonus if you've accomplished everything else on the list and had perfect weather the whole time.

Thank you for the reply. I updated my tentative itinerary (see below).
Would you recommend making train reservations to any of these places? We do have the Jungfrau Travel Passes too.

Day 1: Mannlichen, Royal Walk, Playground, and maybe walk to Kleine Scheidegg and train back to Wengen
Day 2: Schilthorn, Allmendhubel playground to Mürren via Flower Trail or NorthFace hike, and walk down to Gimmelwald
Day 3: Jungfraujoch or Schynige Platte
Day 4: Bike in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, see Waterfalls, and explore Grindelwald
Day 5: Depart Wengen in morning

It looks like you are getting sound advice. I would agree with Wanderweg that your boys would have more fun at Schynige Platte. I would put Schynige Platte on your "must see list". Consider First mountain if you are in Grindelwald. I liked Jungfraujoch for the glacier and ice cave. What ever you do, take the time to enjoy the whole adventure.

Bad weather days can be filled with Aare Gorge (Aareschlucht) or St. Beatus Cave. Trümmelbach Falls is another option for any weather.

No, don’t pre-purchase any tickets. Nothing sells out and you need to stay flexible for weather. The 2 things you’d have to buy - Schilthorn & Jungfraujoch…Schilthorn you can buy right before you go up. Jungfraujoch which requires a seat reservation — A day or two out, if you decide you really want to try to go, then purchase the seat reservation only, not the actual ticket. Then if weather cooperates and you agree you still want to go, buy the ticket day of, but if weather doesn’t cooperate or you decide you’d rather do the better options suggested here, then you’re not out hundreds of $$$, just the fee for the seat reservation.

Thank you all again. These are great recommendations / suggestions.
After showing my kids various options, they both want to visit the Jungfrau and Schlithorn on separate days.
