Flying out of Geneva: what to do along the way

I have received much help in planning our September trip to the BO area: Thank-you. We will have 10 nights not counting the night prior to departure. We are arriving in Zurich but the departure flights out of Geneva meet our needs better.

Are there any stops along the way or a side trip to a different village that we should consider? We could give up a few nights in the BO for another experience.

You can easily stay a night or two in Lausanne, Montreux, or Vevey and still get your flight out of Geneva if it isn’t too terribly early. The train stops right at the airport and it’s about an hour by train to the airport from Lausanne, for example. Lausanne is right on the lake and is, IMO, charming; Vevey even more so but farther form the airport. Take a look at what Lausanne, Vevey, and Montreux have to offer to see if you want to give up a couple of nights in the Berner Oberland to visit the French-speaking part of Switzerland. Check train times versus your flight departure time and make sure the morning departure will work for you.

Awesome Laurel. We need to get hotel accommodations lined up very soon. Good to know the train goes directly tot he airport. There are 2 flights out...one around 9 and one around 11 if I remember correctly.

You have ten nights not counting the night before your flight, so I think you might enjoy taking 2 from the Berner Oberland and spending them on Lac Leman as Laurel suggests. You can use the intervening day to visit the popular Chateau de Chillon, and/or hike in the vineyards above the lake.

You can take the scenic Golden Pass route from Interlaken Ost to Montreux. You will be going in the “right” direction, coming down from the pass toward Montreux with the panoramic view of the lake below you.

Montreux, Vevey, and Lausanne all have their advocates. (We have not stayed in any of them so I have no recommendation to offer). I will note that Montreux is within walking distance of Chateau de Chillon (1.6 miles on the lakeside pedestrian path) if you are interested in that.

For the night before your flight, depending on the time of departure, you could move closer to the airport but still not stay in downtown Geneva (unless you want to). We stayed in Morges, 40 minutes from the airport by train, before our flight; chosen because of the Audrey Hepburn connection.

We just made all our reservations for our August Swiss adventure. After checking all the small towns on Lake Geneva we decided on Evian. It’s an hour or so train ride from the airport and yes, hotels are filling already for late summer. It’s obviously going to be another very busy year in Europe.
