Fly into Zurich out of Munich--love ideas for Switzerland

Will be flying into Zurich and out of Munich mid April (Sunday early arrival, Saturday afternoon departure). Visiting our son who is currently working in Munich. Son and I previously spent a week in Munich/Salzburg, Innsbruck last April. Decided to fly into Zurich and spend a few days in Switzerland then take train to Munich. Considering Sunday-Wednesday in Switzerland then Wed-Sat Munich so hubby gets to experience Munich and surrounding area as well.

While in Switzerland, I would love to take one of the many scenic train rides but would like input on what would make the most sense for our time there. Should we home base in Lucerne and take day trips, or consider a longer scenic train and overnight in a different location? I don't expect we would be able to hike much this time of year but otherwise open to any suggestions this wonderful group would like to offer. Two mid-50s adults and 2 mid-20's kids traveling. Thank you in advance!

That really only gives you 3 nights in Luzern, and 3 nights in Munich. I would not spend any other overnights in Switzerland. Rather than take a scenic train ride to somewhere else and turn around and return, take the train to Engelberg to visit the high Alps. Also, a boat ride on the lake to Vitznau and then a train to the top of Mt Rigi. That basically covers Monday and Tuesday, then you have to head to Munich.

"Should we home base in Lucerne and take day trips" - Arriving Sunday and leaving Wednesday only gives you two full days. No need to go too far. It's a short trip.

A) You have Lucerne itself, boat cruise, Pilatus, Rigi, Stoos.

B) Head to Konstanz: Konstanz has a small, attractive old town and scenic waterfront. Insel Mainau, Insel Reichenau, Meersburg by boat, St Gallen Abbey by quick train.

C) Head straight to Munich. Plenty to do there for a few days or more. Train to Gapa and/or Mittenwald for the alps/ cable cars/gorges. Long, scenic train ride/? - Depending on the weather, 07:32 train to Bolzano for lunch and a walkabout: return 16:30 or 18:30.

With such a short time, I would indeed stick to Luzern

Sunday - Zurich Flughafen > Luzern - explore historic old town

Monday - boat ride + Rigi for expansive mountain/lake views

Tuesday - Optional Lugano/Morcote OR Pilatus OR longer scenic boat ride day to Fluelen

*day trip to Lugano & Morcote via the high speed direct train if you'd like to see the Italian part of Switzerland & the sunny side of the alps for likely some warmer weather & palm trees. Take the boat to Morcote to experience a very quaint historic village on the water
*Pilatus for more alpine views
*Boat ride to Fluelen for more "fjord" views

Wednesday - Luzern > Munich

Thank you all for some great suggestions, I appreciate the time you took to outline some options for us! As a follow up question, we land around 0730 into Zurich and will need to wait a few hours, 1030 +/- for son to arrive by train from Munich. Once he arrives should we head straight to Lucerne or would it be worthwhile to explore Zurich for a few hours first?

@wanderweg Would you be able to provide some more information about the day trip to Lugano/Morcote boat ride day trip. One site suggested the boat ramp is walking distance from the train stop then take the Navigation boat to Morcote. Is it as simple and straightforward as this appears? I believe it also stated the boat ride might be included if we had the Swiss Pass.

All--Would the Swiss Travel pass be our best option or due to the proposed itinerary of train from airport to Lucerne, this trip to Lugano/Morcote and then train to Zurich and on to Munich, would it be more cost efficient to purchase tickets separately?

Thank you all again for helping me plan out last minute change to starting in Switzerland!

Is your son taking the train to Zurich HB or Zurich Flughafen (airport)? If he’s taking the train to HB from Munich, you could take the 12 min train from the airport to HB, store your luggage and walk around a bit for maybe some breakfast near the station OR you could just go to Luzern and have him meet you there. Your hotel may let you store your luggage there prior to check-in to be more ready for exploration when he arrives.

The boat dock in Lugano is about a 10 minute walk from the train station. Just follow the boat icon signs out of the train station or put it into your phone GPS to get walking directions or look at the maps on SBB when you input your route. A person at the ticket office can also help you upon arrival.

It’s about a 1 hr boat ride or 30 minutes via 1 train & 1 bus to get to Morcote, so you could boat there and then return via bus/train if you felt any sort of time constraint. We boated both ways as a day trip from the Luzern area, walked up the hill to the historic Castello di Morcote, wandered the cobblestone streets and ate along the water. You can see Italy from across the water while you’re there and all the menus and signs are in Italian with authentic Italian food at the restaurants.

Yes, Morcote is included in the Swiss Pass. I did some quick math for you of
Zurich Flughafen > Luzern
Luzern > Boat to Vitznau > funicular to Rigi roundtrip
Luzern > roundtrip Lugano/Morcote via train/boat
Luzern > St.Gallen (on your way to Munich)

—With that itinerary, you’re looking at roughly 350 chf full fare (not including German border to Munich)
—-With the 4 day Swiss Pass it becomes 304 chf
—-However, if you go ahead now and purchase Saver Day Passes for Monday & Tuesday, your total would drop to 206 chf.

Saver Day Passes work like a one day Swiss Travel Pass, but they have to be bought in advance and the closer you get to the date of travel, the more expensive they get before they are not available at all (around a week + out usually). Right now for mid April you can get SDPs for 61chf/day, which would cover a day trip to Rigi & Lugano/Morcote and then you’d just buy your ticket from Zurich Flughafen to Luzern (right now around 31chf) and then the portion of your Luzern to Munich ticket is around 50chf (113 chf total)

Your ticket to Munich will get more expensive the longer you wait. If you get it through Bahn.de with your son all on 1 reservation then you can choose specific seats next to each other. Obviously purchase 1 ticket Luzern to Munich, I was just pricing out the portion within Switzerland to compare the pass coverage. It will be in euros on Bahn.de and we always purchase our ticket from Munich to Switzerland via them because it’s a German train (DB) and thus we get to pick our seats with Bahn.de vs if purchased on SBB they just assign you without choice if you do the seat reservation. We like to upgrade to first class for that trip, as it’s typically not much more expensive and more spacious for the long ride.

Hope that helps!

@wanderweg. WOW, I cannot thank you enough for all of the detail you have taken the time to share--I'm grateful for all of the detail! We will wait for our son in Zurich, either at airport or main train station whatever is easiest for him to connect with us before heading to Lucerne. I appreciate the nudge to get moving on purchasing our train tickets to Munich. I have the DBB app and will look into some times and move forward so we can select our seats together. Thank you again--so excited for our trip!

Luzern > Lugano--Morcote boat trip. I am not sure if I am reading the boat schedule properly. We will be able to travel from Luzern to Lugano then Morcote on either Monday or Tuesday mid April. It looks like there is only one boat for Tuesday leaving Lugano at 1500, arrive Morcote 1555 but then return boat leave Morcote at 1620...that doesn't seem like much time at all in Morcote. Chatgpt said there are two routes that day, one leaving at noon and also suggested taking the bus one way either to or from Morcote and the boat the other way. Thoughts? I know April is tough with weather but if we do this as a day trip it seems as if we need to really plan our travel times properly.
