Florence to Zurich, with time in the Alps -- train tips and places to stay, please!

Hello there, thanks so much in advance for your tips! Husband and I are taking our honeymoon this October, in Italy and Switzerland.

First we’re spending a week in Tuscany (4 days out in the countryside and 4 days in Florence).

After that, we have another week before we fly back home to San Francisco from Zurich.

I’d love some tips on the second part of the trip- how to best travel from Florence to the Alps, then onto Zurich.
Ideally we’d spend 3-4 days in the alps and 3-4 days in Zurich (unless that’s too long in Zurich and 2-3 days is fine). We don’t want the pace of the trip to be too rushed.

Ideally we wouldn’t go all the way from Florence to Zurich and then back track up to the Alps- I’m just having trouble figuring out how to plan the train route, where to stop and stay overnight, etc.

Zermatt was high on our list, but I’m having trouble sorting out the route on the Swiss train website - especially considering we’ll be coming from Italy- going back and forth on the Italian and Swiss websites is getting me mixed up.

In the alps we’d like to enjoy a scenic train, stay somewhere idyllic, get in some beautiful hikes.

Thank you so much!

You can travel from Florence Italy to Lucerne Switzerland, which is the next town over from Zurich. Lucerne has more to offer in alpine adventure then Zurich. You can do Zurich on a day trip but stay in Lucerne. Lucerne to Zurich is less than an hour via train.

As far as the Swiss alps, you can train to Lauterbrunnen from Lucerne and stay in the Berner Oberland valley where you can explore the mountains on both side of the valley and the small villages. Base yourself in Lauterbrunnen there.

On your Florence to Zurich trip. Book the first leg on https://www.trenitalia.com/ Florence/Milan

Then book second leg, Milan/Lucerne on https://www.myswissalps.com/train

For the most panoramic scenic train ride from Milan to Lucerne, take the Swiss Bernina Express Line.

We did that route a few years from Florence to Zurich. This is a timing issue with the train from Milan to Zurich. We actually stayed overnight in Milan so that we didn't have to catch an early train to Milan to make the connection to Zurich as we want a mid-day run to Zurich. We actually stayed in Zug a little community right on the lake just south of Zurich. Spent a day on Mt. Rigi.

Good tips above, but I'd order things differently.
1. Take train from Florence to Interlaken (Florence-Milan-Spiez-Interlaken Ost) and pick a destination in the Berner Oberland (Mürren, Lauterbrunnen, Wengen...). I'd recommend 4 nights.
2. Take train to Lucerne. Stay 2-3 nights.
3. Take train to Zürich. Stay 0-1 nights. Only stay one night if your flight is very early, otherwise it's not really worth it, you can easily reach the airport straight from Luzern.

I suggest this order first, because going to Luzern first, then the Berner Oberland, and back to Zürich makes you backtrack.

Keep in mind the weather in the Alps. Be sure to be prepared for October. I have never been in October, but I know rain and or snow is possible. Quite a contrast from Italy. Enjoy.

You have three good options for travel to the Alps before heading to Zurich for your flight. All start from MIlan, which you can reach easily from Florence by train, either Trenitalia or Italo. In order of my perceived scenic value:

1) Train from MIlan to Tirano, changing there to a Swiss train over Bernina Pass. This is the only train route that actually goes over the Alps instead of tunneling under at least part of the way. This route takes you to the Engadine area, with the villages of Pontresina and St. Moritz. If you are starting the day in Florence, I suggest you go only as far as Varenna on Lake Como ( an hour's ride from MIlan) and overnight there. This is a charming lakeside village and a good place for your farewell to Italy.

Next day you continue North to Tirano on the Swiss border, and change there to a Swiss train over the Bernina Pass. This is in my view the most scenic of the so-called scenic train routes in Switzerland. You can ride the named Bernina Express or a regular regional train on the same tracks; the scenery is the same. Head to Pontresina, St. Moritz, or one of the smaller villages close by and overnight there.

Day Three you have some choices. You can take the Glacier Express from St. Moritz to Zermatt and spend 3-4 nights there. Or you can head to Luzern as suggested above. Or you can go to the Berner Oberland (Lauterbrunnen, Mürren, etc.) for the remaining time in the Alps. Zermatt and the Lauterbrunnen area both offer excellent hiking. You only need to leave one night for Zurich, before your flight. Or you can spend your final night in Luzern if your flight home is noon or later.

2) From MIlan, take the train to Luzern, spend a night or two there, and then talk the Golden Pass train route to the Berner Oberland. The fast train to Luzern uses a deep tunnel, but you can choose instead a combination of regional trains that go over the old Gotthard Pass route, with a much shorter tunnel. Or you can move to Lugano and ride the named Gotthard Panorama Express, which uses the higher route and combines it with a boat ride from Flüelen to Luzern.

Note that the Gotthard Panorama Express stops running Oct. 20, and before then does not run on Mondays.

3) From MIlan you can take the fast train through the Simplon tunnel under the Alps to Brig, and change trains there to head either to Zermatt or to the Berner Oberland.

Zermatt is easy to get to from Florence. Train to Milan, then an EC train to Visp, then the train to Zermatt. Afterward, as others may have suggested, Luzern would be more romantic than Zurich. Train to Visp, then train to Spiez, then train to Interlaken Ost, then a scenic train to Luzern on the Luzern-Interlaken Express. From Luzern you can get a train direct to Zurich airport in just over an hour.

Swiss trains run like, well a Swiss watch. Minimum of one train every hour on every line, and often more. You can look at schedules at www.sbb.ch/en. This will show trains beginning at Milano Centrale and you will see the single connection routes via Visp. To get from Zermatt to Luzern, add Interlaken Ost in the "via" box to get that routing. Florence to Milano Centrale have fast trains at least once per hour. https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html

If you just want to see the whole train schedule in one place, and not divided by who sells what tickets, then we prefer to use the German rail site. Looking Up Train Schedules and Routes Online gives you the Deutsche Bahn train schedule link and tips for using it.

Thank you all so much! This is very helpful. I’m excited to dig in more and research these towns further.

Do any of you have specific hotel recommendations that would cause you to pick one Alps town / city destination over another? As it’s our honeymoon we are considering where we might want to “splurge” a bit on lodging (in the $400-600 range would be maximum per night for someplace special).

Also appreciate moderately priced tips, too! Choosing hotels can be so overwhelming, lots of review to pour through so we appreciate recent experiences or go-to favorites of yours.

Also I should include we are very interested in architecture and design (classic and contemporary) if that makes any places stand out!
We also love excellent bakeries :)

Thank you again!

Re. fancy hotels: the Beausite Park Hotel in Wengen (Berner Oberland) is really excellent (do get a room with mountain views, it is worth the price!).
