Florence to the Uk via Switzerland, November. How to do it?

We are returning from a holiday in Tuscany mid November by train. We want to enjoy
the journey rather than just flying back.

Our current thoughts are:-
1. to just spend a day in Lucerne on the way back and 1 more night in Florence.

Return car. Overnight Florence
Train to Lucerne. Overnight Lucerne
Day in Lucerne. Overnight Lucerne.
Return to London.

OR
Take a scenic train back - with Treno Gottardo.

Return car. Train to Locarno, Switzerland. Overnight Locarno.
Take the Treno Gottardo which goes via the old route (I hope!) and on to Lucerne.
Overnight Lucerne.
Day in Lucerne. Overnight Lucerne.
Return to London.

Or as above but 2 nights in Locarno and 1 in Lucerne.

Has anyone done this route and have thoughts on it?
Is the Treno Gottardo worth doing particuarly mid November?

Or is it all not worth it - just fly home?

Thanks Sue

Beware, the (bad) weather might be an issue. November is the least best month for travelling to Switzerland. 1-2 nights in Switzerland are certainly doable.
