First timer-booked a trip in early April, now second guessing myself and thinking next September?

Right now I have booked, in early April 2019 , 2 nights Zurich, 4 nights lugano, 5 nights wengen, and 4 nights lucerne.

I originally wanted to go to Switzerland because of all of the beautiful pictures I saw of the Lauterbrunnen region. April was the only month that could work with my work schedule. Plus I didn't want to have to wait a long time to take the trip!

Originally I read that April can still be beautiful and I'd have a good time. Now as I'm reading more and more it seems like nothing will really be in bloom at that point. Has anyone had a good time in April? Should I instead plan for Late August/Early September? It would just be a bummer to have to make it a year away.

I'm not interested in skiing or anything like that, the most outdoorsy thing I will do is do some easy trails for the views. Everything is booked as refundable so I have some flexibility, but I really don't want to wait a whole year to go on a trip.

Thoughts?

Personally, I love September/October. Honestly I have never been there in April, but have been to Switzerland 7 times in mid to late September. There are lots of flowers blooming. I think there may be less rain although we have had some issues with that in the Berner Oberland of Switzerland. Can't imagine April would be any drier.

Thanks for the reply. It's such a tough call because I don't want to wait an entire year but I recognize the weather will be a lot better in September :(. Not sure what to do. I wish in April the areas like Lauterbrunnen would be beautiful like in the pictures I see online.

By "first timer" I take it that this will be your first trip to Europe?

Interesting choice to go to Switzerland (and only Switzerland) for about 2 weeks in April. Nothing wrong with that (although as you are now thinking, weather may be an issue to some degree). Most people contemplating their first trip to Europe tend to want to go to a dozen places in a week (too many) and they want to hit places that are the biggest, most iconic tourists magnates (eg Paris, Rome, etc.).

Yes first time to Europe. I considered traveling to all different cities, but felt picking up and traveling every other day would cut down on the time I have to actually be in a city. Switzerland is nice because I can do day trips to another country if I really wanted (Lugano to Italy, for instance).

Again I am new to this so probably won't get it 100% right, but hopefully will still have a good time!

My first trip to "the Continent" consisted of Rome, the Cinque Terre and Switzerland - in early April! I couldn't decide between Rome and Switzerland so we did both, with a stop in the CT. This was back in 2005.

In Switzerland, we stayed in Interlaken and took the train up to Lauterbrunnen. The ground was a little soggy, but we encountered very few other hikers on the trail. It was overcast, so we didn't get the jaw dropping views you see in pictures, but it still reminded me of Rivendell from Lord of the Rings. The skies didn't really open up until we made it to Zurich on our last day and we were pretty much done by then anyway.

It was still beautiful and I really don't remember if anything was in bloom or not, but it was kind of soggy. With that said, in this day and age, weather is such a crap shoot - I'd go for it if it works best for schedule.

Part of me would like to do some day trips into Northern Italy. Any recommendations for destination points in northern italy? I guess Milan wouldn't be too far!
I may chop off 1 day on each end of Wengen, with +1 day to Lugano and +1 day to Lucern. Again all my hotels are refundable so I can move things around if need be.

Hi. I love the idea of travel in April. I have not yet traveled in Switzerland during that month. I do recall more than one post on this forum, and now that I have googled it, have seen it on other forums telling that April is the month when farmers spread liquid manure on the fields. You may want to check out this forum via the Search bar at the top of the page and type April, Switzerland, and manure. While this may not be a deterrent to visiting the cities, perhaps it would impact your 5 days in the Berner Oberland? I am sure there are more knowledgeable travelers than me who could chime in on this subject.

Oh yikes don't want that! I really wasn't 100% sure how to divide the days up...but I think an extra day in lugano and lucerne leaving only 3 days in Wengen might be the better option. I could always do a day trip from Lucerne to Wengen if I wanted!

Update: I spoke with my manager and I can do June or September as well! So I was thinking maybe June would be a sweet spot. Where things would be in full bloom or close, and I won't have to wait an entire year to go.

Lauterbrunnen Valley, Murren, Gimmelwald, Wengen - will all be in full bloom in June.

My daughter's boyfriend in Switzerland was reporting spectacular weather last April. Temps in the mid-20s already.
She was there last September and it was gorgeous, and she's there now again and sending me beautiful snapchats.
We are going again in May and expect it to be nice, from what I've heard. I was there last December, so I know it will be sunnier than then.

When looking back at April of this year remember that all of Europe had a very unusual and very severe winter followed by extremely hot and dry spring (what spring??) and summer.

Weather for this year is not representative of weather in other years.

We went to Lugano in Sept of last year. It is so far south, and the trees / vegetation seem to be for a warmer climate, so it should be good.

Go to YouTube and type in "Switzerland April weather" and you'll get lots of videos.
I just did that yesterday for the Valis region (we have Swiss friends that live in that area - who we visited last year) and I saw lots of green trees and grass but lots of people with their winter coats on.
My Valis friends had a snowfall in April but it melted quickly.
