Finding train ticket prices to compare Swiss passes

Hello: I am planning a trip to Switzerland for September 2019. I have read many suggestions both in RS guide book and on this website, to calculate the cost of the train, cable car, lift tickets I will be buying and compare the totals to the cost of both the Swiss Pass and the Swiss Half Price Card. In order to find these prices, I have also read suggestions to go to the SBB website, enter various departure and arrival points to get the prices of the tickets without a pass, so that I can then compare. I have tried numerous times to do this, and cannot find the prices listed on the SBB site. I have entered the cities, been shown the various times the trains run, hit the button for buying a ticket but no price shows up. I don't consider myself tech challenged, but in this case I cannot find the button to click to find the prices. Help! Thank you RS Forum. I know you all to be a great help.

It is not you. There is a problem with the site right now.
But if you want a general idea until it resolves you can also search using https://www.raileurope.com
But I would not buy a ticket using raileurope as they markup the ticket up when you checkout

Well, if you know RailEurope marks up the ticket prices and you would not recommend buying from them...then why do you recommend someone to go there to make a price comparison?

You might try downloading the SBB app for your phone and see if the prices are on there.
In the meantime, it sounds like you are going to the Jungfrau area ("lifts and trains") and if so, you can look up those local prices here:

https://www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/prices-and-brochures/

I'll also add that I think the regular price of a train from Geneva to Lauterbrunnen is around $90, and Zurich to Lauterbrunnen is around $80. Don't forget to also check out the Berner Oberland Pass if you are going to that area.

Ok, I'm on the site looking at the pricing information, but I need further help. This is what it says: One Way
from Zurich airport to Lucerne Zurich Lucerne airport
Via Zürich HB - Ebikon
2nd class
1 × ordinary tickets, Half-Fare Card 125

Open tip

Valid: Thu, 30.08.2018

to Fri, 31.08.2018 05:00

From CHF 16.00
Why does it say: "1 x ordinary tickets, Half-Faire Card 125"? I did not enter a request for half fare. And what is an "ordinary ticket", if it has "Half-Fare Card" following and what does 125 stand for?

Also, I was wanting the fare from Zurich Airport to the city of Lucerne. Why does it say Zurich Lucerne Airport --->? Oh dear. It seems like it would have been Zurich Airport Lucerne.

There is no search option for from Zurich Airport;
You have to use Zürich Flughafen (which is in German for Zurich Airport) to Luzern
Searching 30 days in advance it will cost 15 CHF with a Half Fare Card 30 CHF without for non-stop.
I took that route my first trip to Switzerland 2 years ago and the price is the same except I was able to get Super Saver for 15CHF

The SBB site always defaults to list the price with the Half Fare Card. It is very common that people living there to have the Half Fare Card.

Zürich Flughafen to Luzern costs CHF 15.00, 2nd class with a Half Fare Card, or CHF 30.00 2nd class full fare.
These are fixed prices, for any train, any day. Swiss Railways, unlike other countries, doesn't have different prices for different trains. Are these the prices you were getting?

There are no stations on the Swiss rail network called "Zurich airport" or "Lucerne". If you enter these names on the SBB website, it will offer alternatives for each one, including Zürich Flughafen and Luzern. But you then have to select one of the alternatives;

Prices usually stay fixed for 2-3 years. They may go up this December when the timetables change, but if they do it will only be a few percent, and the passes will probably go up the same percentage.

We are leaving the end of September and will be in Switzerland the first week of October. I read some reviews and found
[1]: https://www.goeuro.com I was able to look at train schedules and prices and found trains much cheaper than the rail pass. A deciding factor was the question of either tight specific schedule or flexibility? We knew where we wanted to go and when, making the individual ticket option best for us. It was work figuring out the schedules, train stations and connections but I don't mind that type of thing.

We will be back mid October so I can tell you what problems we encountered and if we would use a pass next time. We will also be in Luxembourg, France, Austria and Czech Republic using trains.

I would put a question mark about using sites like GoEuro.
The definitive place to get fares and times is website of the company running the trains. In the case of Switzerland that is SBB (Swiss Federal Railways): https://www.sbb.ch/en

Any other website is a reseller, and resellers have a reputation of adding a markup to the prices and/or not listing or sellng tickets to all trains. Two I know are good ( https://www.trainline.eu/ and https://loco2.com/ ), but they only cover some countries and not Switzerland. Many others I know add surcharges, and I would avoid.
I have read no evidence for or against GoEuro, but I advise "caveat Emptor".
