Few questions regarding Swiss Travel Pass

Hi,

We will be visiting Switzerland in mid October. We were able to found that Swiss Travel Pass (2nd Class) would be best for us (in comparison to other passes). We are in US right now. I have few questions about this pass

  • Is there any reason, if I should buy it now or later ? Or when we reach there ?

  • Do we ever see any discount offers on this pass ? If no, we can buy it anytime.

  • From where, should I buy it for best price ? I can see different prices from different sellers. swisstravel.raileurope.com gives for $548, swiss-pass.ch gives for $604 and raileurope-world.com gives it for $458.

Thanks

Yes, discounts very likely could be offered before you leave, especially for fall travel, so keep an eye on that. US prices also will change with the exchange rate. Prices differences should not be as great as you have listed; either someone has outdated info or you did not compare apples to apples. Remember that both consecutive-day and flexi-day passes offer 3, 4, 8, or 15 travel days and both offer 1st or 2nd class. Raileurope-world is not for delivery to North America; only other parts of the world. For USA delivery before you go, use this link: http://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/transportation/trains/switzerland-rail-passes.

If you are flying directly into Switzerland, you can buy a pass at the train station there, but Swiss rail authorities want to reduce train station congestion by selling passes in advance. In a couple of months, they are planning to sell them all pre-validated (pre-printed with your travel period), as well. If you're arriving by train from another country, then it's certainly easier to have the pass in your hands.
