February trip Switzerland/Austria

This is LONG range planning for 2016. I plan on running a marathon in Italy in mid February 2016. After running and visiting family we would like to spend a few days in both Austria and Switzerland. I know this isn't much time but this is so that we can experience just a bit of two more countries. I am thinking 2-3 days in each country. Looking for ease of travel (not going to rent a car) and spectacular sights. Thanks for any suggestions.

Where in Italy will you be? Do you want to ski and see mountains?

I am running in Terni. We will be in Rome, Florence and also Milan and Verona on the end of trip. Don't want to ski. Want to see something in a different country. Italy area subject to change. I spend several months a year in Italy so looking for something different. Don't want to rent a car.
Thanks

Since you are going to be in Milan/Verona you could take the train through the Dolomites from Verona straight through to Innsbruck, Austria. From there it's a straight shot by rail, west to Zurich and then transfer to a short ride down to Lucerne, Switzerland. After that you could head south, transferring in Lugano, dropping back down to Milan.
Since you're relying on public transport I think the rail trip via this route is one of the easier ones for where you want to go. Innsbruck is a gorgeous city as it Lucerne. I think these will give you a taste of both countries with the least amount of hassle!
