I have two different train apps loaded on my phone, Trainline and DB Navigator, any thoughts out there on favorites? Trip doesn't start until June but in looking at them Trainline appears to be an aggregator app that looks at all trains available while DB deals with only German and Austrian trains. Trainline gives fares in U. S. dollars most of their info is in English.
For Switzerland I suggest using the local SBB train app. It is very easy to use.
For anywhere I would recommend using the website (or app) for that country's rail company. Trainline might be a little more convenient, but I've never found it to be price competitive with the rail lines.
German Rail's website is in English, and not that hard to figure out. Prices are in euro, but that's what you're going to be using over there, anyway.
both the SBB app and webpage are excellent, accurate, in CHF which you pay with in Switzerland, and every page is available in English as well as other languages.
And you can get live info about the trains and stations, and platform numbers and facilities..
No matter the operator, no matter what type of transportation, bus, tram, train, funicular, gondola, ship - from address to address SBB takes you the best way, comprehensively throughout the entire country.
Trainline is just a travel agent.
DB and SBB are actual train companies. They are able to sell tickets for each other's trains however. The DB navigator can show you schedules for most of Europe, and sell your tickets for any trip that starts or ends in Germany. Austria, Switzerland, France and a few other countries.
But my suggestion is to always book your train tickets with the company where your trip starts.
(The exception is France, where Trainline is indeed useful).
